Episode 5 Recap: Tunnel of Fears

Who Wants to Be a Superhero? Apparently not Whip-snap! Well, she probably wanted to be one at some point, prompting her to audition for this show, but as soon as the cameras started rolling, so did the waterworks. I don't think she's been able to hold back tears in a single episode since the start of the season. And in this week's episode, she cried about the fact that she cries. Let's dive in:

This week's theme seemed to be all about testing the heroes' fears and weaknesses. Dr. Dark concocted a scheme to steal the city's power, and it was up to the gang to restore it by crawling through a narrow tunnel filled with creepy crawlers. Without even knowing what awaited her inside the tunnel, Whip-snap was freaked. I really don't know what that woman was expecting when she signed up for this show. It ain't The Real World or Big Brother where you're just hanging around the house all day - if you really want to be a superhero, you need to prove it. After a brief hesitation, though, she and the rest of the heroes faced their fears and restored power to the city with less then five seconds to spare. That was a close one! Who knows what would have happened if they failed? The city would've been in chaos and all because the heroes defending it are afraid of tight spaces, dirt, spiders and snakes. Though I guess even Indiana Jones was afraid of snakes.

After the challenge, the heroes finally got a chance to kick back and enjoy a meal out on the town in full costume. They drew a lot of attention to themselves and loved every minute of it. It even seemed for a brief second that Whip-snap realized once again why she wanted to be in this competition in the first place. The children were fascinated by the group of costumed characters, while I'm sure the adults in the restaurant shrugged it off as just being a part of living in Los Angeles.

Upon returning to their hideout, the crew learned Dr. Dark wasn't quite done using their secret-identity files against them. His new scheme was to expose the dark side of each hero to the big boss man, Stan Lee. I have to say, I found it pretty unfair that Whip-snap was exposed as a thieving stalker while the others were exposed for stupid things like having a pirate-themed room in their house (Parthenon) or wanting to take burlesque-dancing lessons (Hygena). Whip-snap's secret is something that really should have stayed a secret if the other revelations were going to be so lame. I highly doubt that Hyper-strike's darkest moment was getting fired from the circus for not being able to perform one of his stunts.

Once all of the secrets were revealed, it was time for the heroes to evaluate each other in this week's competition. It's no surprise they called out Whip-snap for being the least heroic of the bunch and that the Defuser and Parthenon were considered the strongest. To me, that's been clear since Episode 1. Although I like Hyper-strike and he definitely showed us he's got some great superhero moves this week, we've still not seen him accomplish anything in the challenges. He's coasted through this whole season. By the end of the hour, I think it was abundantly clear to everyone that it was finally time to say goodbye to Whip-snap. She made it through last week by the skin of her teeth but had no such luck this time around. Let them salty tears fall!

My prediction for next week is that it will be Hygena's time to go, leaving Hyper-Strike, the Defuser and Parthenon to duke it out in the final three.
