November 16, 2006: "Static"
I'm not going to say I didn't like "Static"; I am going to say that parts of it were very frustrating. The episode ended and I just really didn't know how to feel about it. Much of the hour featured Lex and Lana's "love" story, a story I'm just not completely feeling. Thanks to this "142" meteor-freak dude (we find out later his name is Bronson), Lex and Lana are living on different frequencies. It all actually reminded me of the movie

R.E.M's "What's the Frequency Kenneth?" Anyway, while the two are spending time on alternate planes of existence, Lex hears Lana open up to Chloe about their relationship. Later, when she figures out Lex can hear her, she lets him in on her pregnancy. I feel like the show was trying really hard for us to get into their relationship. Did that happen? Not so much. Especially when Lana admitted that Lex has been more honest with her than anyone has ever been (yet another dig against Clark). What did intrigue me came after Lex and Lana were reunited. Lex was lying through his teeth about 33.1 (the lab where the experiments on the meteor freaks was taking place), saying that it didn't exist. Lana let it be known that she would understand if it were real. After all, these meteor-influenced beings have hurt her and the people she cares about; the best thing to do is to learn about them so they can protect themselves. Lana was acting even more Stepford than usual so it had me wondering: Was she on the up and up with Lex, or was she just trying to get the truth out of him? The hour ended with Lex's proposal, but we didn't get an answer. I honestly have no idea what she's going to do. What do you guys think - will Lana say yes?
We were dangerously low on the Clark action once again, but we did get to see him decide
not to save Lex's life for a change. Instead, he's wisely starting to think past Smallville in favor of the well-being of the rest of the world. He raced off to Seattle to stop another escaped Zoner who pretty much overpowered Clark, despite the fact that he had the crystal Raya had given to him. By the way, how nasty was the thought of those poor victims being deboned? In the end, Clark didn't get to save himself; some mysterious superpowered figure came to his rescue. Love that shot of the Martian Manhunter - he just stood there for a little bit and then he up and flew away. I suspect we'll be seeing him again, considering he was one of the founding members of the Justice League. And the fact that Clark found an Oreo in the barn... the Martian Manhunter is obsessed with this classic cookie.
Other thoughts:
- While Clark was off on his own mission, Jimmy the Geek helped Lana find her man. He actually stepped up to the plate and contributed to the search and rescue of one Lex Luthor.
- Jimmy was cute, especially with his jealousy of Clark, but at times his relationship with Chloe seems a little too cutesy.
- Is Clark starting to keep Chloe out of the loop?
- Pro-wrestler Batista played the massive Zoner who broke backs and ripped skeletons from bodies.
- The guy who played StaticBronson seemed so familiar. I finally figured out that three weeks ago he was in
Supernatural's "Simon Said" episode, where he played another bad guy with special abilities - he was able to control people with his mind. It's such a super-small world, isn't it?
