February 7, 2007: Apocalypse, Push
Or, as this episode is otherwise known as, "Alive and Tearing It Up." Tonight starred our favorite Texas Ranger Captain Push, the incomparable (
Arliss Howard, who is married to Debra Winger) as the dreamer.
"Listening unofficially." I just liked the way that sounded. And I loved the way Push said, "Tell 'em you
dreamt it."
Happiness and puppies abound as we get a whole new side plot with the fabulous
Maria Lark! Bridgette has learned 150 street names for heroin.... She rattles off a litany of names for the drug (H, big daddy, rainbow dust and even Bart Simpson), then goes on to discuss the aliases of marijuana. She's concerned when her father knows the word "spliff," but he tells her he learned all about drugs at the same kind of drug assembly she had just attended. Then he assures her he would never use them - although by his tone, he learned about drugs while using a few.
Being her mother's daughter, Bridgette is looking though Daddy's drawers because she dreamed she saw him smoking a doobie. Poor little Bridge is crying. Capt Push wants to know what's on her mind, but she doesn't want to tell him: "I saw Daddy smoking drugs." She doesn't want him to go to jail. That was great as well.
Joe and Allison get into one of their very rare arguments. He refers to her as "
Miss Holier-Than-Thou," and it was pretty fun to watch.
What was also fun to watch?
" When Push wouldn't admit he was having the dreams and wanted Allison to be his beard. That cracked me up.
" Ariel's slow cereal eating to tick off Bridge.
" Ariel and the phone: what a young teenager she is.
" Scanlon: hi, hottie! (That's just me calling him one.)
Best lines:
" Bridgette's "hard to have an appetite when your daddy's a liar." (I was on the floor. She needs her own show. Seriously.)
" "It's sad, she has a keen intuition but a feeble memory."
" "I'm a lawman. I'm not psychic." Push seems so proud!
" Bridge's question when she sees the picture of her dad: "Doesn't it look exactly like you?" And when he replies, "It looks just like me," she replies with, "Oh Daddy, you're such a liar."
Don't you think Push is sexy in his own Southern way? Obviously Debra sees it.
I really enjoyed how they uncovered who the killers were. I felt a twinge when the cardiologist asked if Mike and Janice had been by to say hello. And they looked like the killers in Push's dream, but then it turned out to be the Serbian mob guy and the security guard. I loved that! It was quite a surprise.
I think the story Push told Bridge to allay her fears about her law-breaking father was made better by the fact that it was a lie. And I loved it when
Scanlon saved the day. Did I say "hottie"? Well, it's my prerogative to say it twice. I also love the friendship Allison has forged with Push, though he definitely needs her more than she needs him.
All in all, this will probably go down as one of my favorite episodes. I love to see these different elements they have been adding lately, and the humor really brought it home for me. Plus, you all know how I feel, and I think most of you agree with me, about little Miss Maria. Arliss Howard always adds such a nice vibe. I am astonished, however, that Devalos was only on the show for about 23 seconds. It's episodes like
"Apocalypse, Push" that give me faith in TV!
