Season 3 — Episode 5

This was definitely one of the best episodes yet. This season we've been getting glimpses of a more serious Kathy, but never too serious since she always follows a serious moment with something hilarious. I never thought I'd actually learn something from viewing a Kathy episode. All those questions she asked the prison wardens and the prisoners themselves were so interesting and produced even more thought-provoking answers. Now we know what ROY stands for: Rumor on Yard. And LURD: Lesbian Until Release Date. Hey - you gotta get some somehow, right? Kathy now has a way of making me cry just by crying herself. When you're not used to seeing someone that makes you laugh nonstop start to cry, doesn't it get you teary-eyed? Sure does for me. Just as it was for Kathy, it was a heartbreaker for me to hear that pregnant prisoner say that she won't be able to see her own baby after it is born... unless her husband brings the child for a visit.

So many highlights, so I'll point out most of them here, but please feel free to add any I neglect to include:

- I loved that all of the audiences shown during this episode were supportive and receptive ones, from the Gay Porn Awards audience down to the audience of prisoners (since I can't relate to people who don't find Kathy funny, I enjoy watching it when people treat Kathy like she deserves to be treated - with standing ovations and loud laughter).
- Speaking of treating Kathy like a queen, one of the biggest highlights was seeing Kathy being so welcome in the streets of San Francisco (like "Brangelina"). I actually said out loud: "Now that's how she needs to be treated everywhere." Can you tell I'd be happy just watching Kathy read the phone book? But I'm not a stalker like that prisoner dude towards the end who knew all those personal details about Kathy. Scary.
- It was certainly a change of pace to see Kathy on her blind date with celebrity poker player Mike "The Mouth" Matusow. Apparently, Kathy sometimes needs that rare boost of testosterone in her life. Yes, he was obnoxious (I could've done without the sarcastic suggestions of physical violence), but I guess I'd rather see her go on a date with Mike than with Ron Jeremy, only because I know she can handle dumb humor like Mike's. How about Kathy's reaction to Mike's "I'm a complete moron" line? Brilliant (with a wide smile): "Nice to meet you."
- Kathy's mom, Maggie, giving Mike the third degree before their date and Maggie's concerned reaction to Kathy's degree of cleavage.
- Of course, Kathy was upset her limo ride was running late in traffic for the Gay Porn Awards: "I don't want the porn-loving gays to be pissed at me because I'm late for the red carpet. If I lose the gays, I'm screwed!" and she was sure " Ellen was right on time for the Oscars."
- Of Kathy's favorite award categories I can get away with mentioning here, my favorite was Kathy saying that the Best Oral Scene category just had to be for "reciting a scene from Shakespeare."
- I knew Kathy was going to compare the Gay Porn Award gift bag to the Emmy gift bag, but nothing was funnier than Kathy giving the vibrators to her assistants only because the gizmos were simply too loud.
- Just as I enjoyed when Whoopi and Joan gave Kathy Carnegie Hall advice last month, it was good hearing Paul Rodriguez give Kathy tips on performing in a prison: "Be real" and "Don't ask them why they're there."
- I found it quite intriguing to witness those female prisoners going through their culinary training (Kathy seemed to love the meal they prepared for her) as well as the prison auto mechanic that used to not know how to change the oil in her car.
- Did seeing that one prisoner obsessively watching her TV make you think that prison can't be half bad? Kidding. But it did make me think, "Wow. What would I do if I couldn't watch TV?"
- How funny was it that Kathy's women's prison audience wasn't filled up due to Prison Break being on at the same time? And, of course, they love Idol in prison. Unfortunately they only get to vote once each.
- Another laugh-out-loud moment that followed something not-so-funny was Kathy mentioning having to wear a "stab vest" before entering the maximum security section, just like she has to do at home with Jessica.
- Then we got another one of those serious moments when it was revealed that Kathy had a brother that was incarcerated for a few years before passing away. That reporter sure did his advance research before the press conference at the men's prison.
- Yes, the male prisoners weren't as receptive as the females, but you could tell they still appreciated Kathy for being there and still cheered her on.

We'll be able to cheer Kathy on for only two more episodes this season. Enjoy them while you can!
