June 12, 2007: Season 3 Episode 2
It was great reading your comments last week. Glad to read that you all enjoyed the episode like I did. This one didn't quite measure up, but last week's season premiere was a tough act to follow. I guess it's because there were so many scenes depicting Kathy failing to make people laugh, and that is just something I cannot relate to. Didn't you just want those jewelry designers to get a life, or at least a sense of humor? Obviously, I like watching footage of what it is
actually like to be in an average Kathy Griffin audience: nonstop laughter, screaming and applause. I also wanted more scenes with Kathy's parents, but, because we know
the shape of things to come, every scene with Kathy's dad, John Griffin, is a treasure. Next week, according to a Bravo press release, the episode is dedicated to him, so do not miss it.
Besides being bothered by the stone-faced corporate Tucson attendees and those chili cook-off Michiganites, there were a good amount of funny moments I'd like to point out (at least the ones that I can get away with mentioning here):
- Kathy couldn't quite get A.J. McLean from the Backstreet Boys to go on a "fake date" with her, so she "settled for"
Nick Carter. Nick's publicist should know better than to try to shun the paparazzi when Kathy is around. I loved watching Kathy show us the difference between an A- or B-list celebrity dealing with paparazzi (covering their faces and screaming "not now") and a D-lister (smiling and posing).
- Kathy blamed her poor reception at the Tucson jewelry-designer event on the lack of gays in the audience: "I wanted the room to be peppered with more gays," and if it's a straight-only room, "they will let you down every time - they don't know how to laugh at a good [
another name for cat] joke." Oh no, she di-int.
- Kathy laid out the ground rules before trying to increase her Michigan ticket sales: "They should not bring children. Or their bibles."
- "Operation Torture Tom" was funny only because whipping boy Tom was such a good sport and did not suffer or appear like he was being tortured as a substitute waiter at the Texas Corral restaurant. Kathy's funniest line (that I can mention here) was her "good thing Tom is straight" comment: "A gay guy would've snapped so much at me, his fingers would've fallen off and he would've been in the hospital for finger repair."
What were
your favorite parts? I purposely left out a bunch of the bleeped-out stuff (it's quite a challenge to write about Kathy's show without offending
someone). Of course, that's also the reason I enjoy watching it - I am always astonished that she gets away with what she gets away with. So don't be shy. Chime in, Kathy fans....
