March 30, 2007: They're Heeeeere Baaaaack!

This was a very strong new episode, and worth waiting for. Any show with cute animals gets bonus points from me. I'd always been a cat person until I got married and wound up with two "dog babies" of my own. Now I love dogs as much as I love cats, each for different reasons. Do you all remember the last episode with Bob the dog, when I'd mentioned that Melinda needed to learn about "calm assertive energy"? See? I was right! I would have liked for the scene with Cesar Millan to be a little bit longer, but it was cute. The whole Homer-Bob story was a fun way to lighten up a pretty dark and intense episode.

I don't know that it was intentional, but in the beginning of the show, when they were focusing in on creepy doll faces and clown faces, one of the clowns made me think of the movie Poltergeist, which wound up being the big mislead until the ghost showed herself. I'm glad that they milked the poltergeist angle for a while, because getting Payne into the Gordons' house with all of that supernatural monitoring equipment was classic, as was the way he was bossing Jim around. My laugh-out-loud moment this episode definitely came from Payne (imagine that): "And an MP3 player so that I can listen to a little Motley Crue, because even though I am a professor, I still like to rock!"

Not much to say on the main ghost story, other than it was a cool mislead to think it was a poltergeist at first. Also, the girl who played Julie reminded me of a young Kyra Sedgwick. I thought it was a little bit too convenient that her real mother was the piano teacher, but I forgive that, because it was an interesting way to resolve the story. Sometimes, it's cool to have endings that don't resolve pretty much the same way every time.

I have a feeling that the remaining new episodes are going to be very interesting, especially with one of the huge character developments we've been aching to see: Melinda "coming out" to Delia. It looks like it just may not go over so well with Delia. It was clever for them to hint at it this episode with Melinda accidentally saying "dogs" when referring to taking Bob to the book signing. Delia's expression said a lot. "Dogs?" I can't wait to see what happens! If they also delve into Payne and his wife from now through May sweeps, I know that this little Ghost Whisperer blog community will be quite happy.
