I'm not sure if it was the bidding war over the newly-titled "Smoke Jumpers," Drama's emotional meltdown on
The View or the whiff of desperation that seems to be surrounding Vince these days, but tonight's episode had a renewed energy and some of those laugh-out-loud lines that I've been waiting for all season. This is what I call progress.
I'm no Hollywood insider, but the entire interview with the ladies of daytime felt a little contrived, though it did allow Johnny a chance for some cathartic release so hopefully, we will get past this Jacqueline obsession.
Debi Mazar can always be counted on to deliver as the eternally perturbed Shauna and I enjoy the fact that she is now representing Johnny. I would love to see what would happen if the two of them got together. Could Shauna end up becoming Johnny's rebound girl?
The currently unemployed (and unemployable) Chase brother was reduced to a parade of meetings with disinterested studio chiefs. (Tom Rothman played himself, the chairman of Fox, in that seventh and final face-to-face, earning the following rave from Ari when he graciously declined Vince's services: "I'd prefer that you lie to us like every other d*** head in this town.") Meanwhile, a beleagured Eric went to war with Amanda when he reneged on the Norton deal once Ari showed an interest in the script. While I admire Eric's attempts to get work for Vince, his game play was a little underhanded and ultimately landed him with the unique problem of getting a huge deal for his newest clients at the possible expense of Vince's next career move.
Other highlights tonight:
- The brutal creativity of Eric and Ari's verbal assaults on each other
- Eric reminding his petulant and demanding new client that he hasn't actually gotten paid yet.
- Ari describing Johnny's fellow prisoners as his "target demographic"
- Johnny telling Vince, "Another incarceration on my record but at least I'm reminded of the soothing touch of a beautiful woman," as the female police officer escorted him out.
- Lloyd's exuberant news that Johnny's interview was the talk of the gay community.
