November 27, 2006: Save Richie, Save the World
Aww, poor Richie. Wait, I started last week like that, too. Seems like I could do that every week now. I think that even though technically
Jason Ritter would get top billing in the show,
Jesse Tyler Ferguson has hilariously become the one to watch. I'm drawn to the character because he's not perfect. There's a little bit of Richie in all of us - except for the running-people-over and smashing-into-stores thing. He's found the love of his life, and everything he's doing is making it more complicated to be with her. But we've had two interventions now. First, Lina basically saved him from overdosing on pills and now she's saved him from - well, sitting in a convenience store. I'm hoping that every four episodes or so, Lina isn't going to have to save him from something else, but maybe that's the route the producers should take.
Some of the funniest moments:
- Holly broadcasts that Richie is in the car and has "erratic behavior," and the shot goes back to him frantically swatting at the bee.
- Ritchie's middle name is "Britney."
- After Duncan offers Richie a place in the house with him and his mother, he warns that Richie might have to "zip her up" and that he should just "look away and power through."
- Duncan's mother tells Ethan that Duncan's cell-phone number is "speed dial 2."
Some observations:
- I love the show. I really do. But why does my comedy always have to end with drama?
- Ethan and Kyle? When did this happen? I don't remember an Ethan-and-Kyle-bonding story line. I'm sure it happened sometime during that party at the Ellenbogens' house, but starting the show off with Ethan going to Kyle's place seemed a little out of sorts to me.
- Other than the simple premise of the show that everyone went to third grade with each other, the producers are finally tying everyone together. In the whole cell-phone whisper-down-the-lane thing, Ethan called Duncan and told him he knew Lina and Richie. Ethan told Kat who Holly was (the girl who killed a rabbit with her shoe), and everyone but Aaron and Perry showed up at Richie's accident scene. There have been a lot of complaints about the quad story lines - maybe this is the start of making it one/two cohesive stories.
- Finally, it only took one episode for Lena and Richie to get back together? Does
David Crane think
The Class isn't going to make it and therefore didn't want to stretch it out? I was looking forward to a billion attempts at getting her back.
