January 8, 2007: The Three Amigos

Happy New Year to all the fans of The Class.

Are the critics finally getting to me? All I've heard since the start of the show was the word "uneven." Up until this episode, I thought the show was friggin' hilarious. But with this one, I too thought it was "uneven." There were many funny moments. In fact, more funny moments in this episode than According to Jim has had in its entire run. But there were also many jokes that just fell completely flat. To me, this was a case of: How many jokes can we cram into 22 minutes?

Maybe my thoughts are changing because I hate Palmer. Jaime King isn't bad to look at, but her character is annoying. Honestly, I'm not that familiar with the career of King to know whether this is bad acting or a poorly developed character. But either way, I'm with Kat on this one - Palmer needs to bite the dust.

Or maybe my thoughts are changing because I hate Fern. True, she brings comic relief to everyone around her, like Nicole and Duncan with their line: "Oh, a gun. You must be Fern." But holy mackerel, Fern's getting really, really mean with her comments. In this episode, it really knocked the wind out of my sails.

Or maybe my thoughts are changing because Holly Ellenbogen is ridiculous. Here's hoping that Fern knocks her off. I'd much rather see her husband - in fact, when was the last time we saw Perry? Or maybe... No, wait - that's enough maybes to last a while.

Let's take a quick run through the funny moments:

1. When Palmer hugs both Ethan and Kat and calls them "the three amigos" and Ethan so glibly says, "We could get jackets."

2. After seeing the wreath of flowers Ethan got for Palmer, Kat says to him, "Did she win the Kentucky Derby?"

3. Ethan cracking up while saying that the thought of Kat and Palmer together was devastating.

But then there was the whole Kyle "buffer" thing - you know, because gay men "like to get buffer." Funny for a minute, akward after the third or fourth minute. And how many times could they go to the well with the Monkey wine? Clearly, one of the writers thought that was funnier than it really was, since they used it at least three times during the episode.

Overall, I think I finally understand where the "uneven" comment is coming from. But one episode does not make a series, and if there was ever going to be a less-than-stellar episode, airing it opposite the BCS National Championship was the right place to put it.

Until next week, friends.
