October 16, 2006: Happy New Year, Best Friend
I feel like this entire episode was Brian staring into his past and running from place to place with weird music orchestrating every move.
And with every move came a slip elsewhere. Let's start with Dave. He may not be smooth, but he really tries. Deena really frustrates me, conjuring up excuses that push her husband further and further away. Enter Suzanne (
Marguerite Moreau). At least she knows a good thing when it's in front of her. (Scratch that, Deena
does know she has a good thing, she just won't act on it.) But even though Suzanne's back for more Dave lovin', I'm not convinced this little affair will last very long.
Slip No. 2: Angelo (
Raoul Bova). Looks like he's gone for good, leaving Nicole with a broken heart and a baby to raise.
Slip No. 3: Marjorie lying to Adam... again. Clearly not the best way to start a marriage. Even more clear, an obvious blaring alarm when the bride is so wrapped up in her conflicting thoughts, she can't even make toast.
I did, however, like the flashbacks of the New Year's Eve party. We finally got to see how Adam and Marjorie came together, how Brian really does wait until it's too late to act on something and how serious Adam really was about their friendship.
In the past and the present, he's definitely not the type of guy who's afraid to share what he's feeling. Adam is all kinds of mushy in this episode.... Telling Dave how nice his eyes are and how much he means to him, hugging, bowtie assistance... it's all very
7th Heaven, if you ask me, but I'll let it go for the sake of easy-watching TV drama.
In the end, it's the classic stop-the-wedding TV sequence... Brian running at the last minute, catching Marjorie right as she's about to walk down the aisle, getting turned down and then
eyed down by the groom. And most important in this typical wedding scenario: The bride goes missing. Damn it, Brian! Look what you've done. Honestly, did any of us think vows would actually be uttered in this episode? How else would the show go on? The question is, how much further can this story line be stretched? All I know is, I see a lot of punches being thrown in the near future.
