In the same week that the Supreme Court ruled to make same-sex marriage legal in California and to make federal benefits available to same-sex spouses and when both New York and San Francisco are celebrating Pride weekend, it seems appropriate to check in on the not-exactly-subtle symbolic journey of True Blood. From the very first episode, when vampires were encouraged to "come out of the coffin," the show hasn't made it a secret that it aims to tell a story about civil rights, specifically gay rights.

So I know I'm not, like, translating the vampire Bible or anything, but to me, this week's episode of True Blood is about three men — Bill, Niall and Ben -- whose shadowy motives are perfect for a show that has never really delineated good and evil all that clearly. Our faithful friends in Bon Temps — and thus also the audience -- are asked to trust each of them, and for now, all looks well. I mean, of course it isn't, but we'll get to that.
