The Rock Blu-ray Review

Nicholas Cage (
), Sean Connery (
), and Ed Harris (
) star in director Michael Bay's (
) action-packed movie,
. A young FBI chemical weapons expert teams with a Federal prisoner to break into Alcatraz and stop a vengeful ex-general threatening to launch missiles loaded with deadly poison gas on an unsuspecting San Francisco.
Originally released on DVD in 1997, Disney's new Blu-ray release includes bonus material from the excellent 2001 Criterion Collection release (which was ported from their LaserDisc release). Extras include the original audio commentary featuring Michael Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, and technical advisor Harry Humphries,
world premiere, Navy SEALs on the Range, Hollywood: Humphries & Teague, Special Effects for Dive, Action Effects: Movie Magic, Outtakes, Secrets of Alcatraz, a Jerry Bruckheimer Interview, Theatrical Trailers, TV Spots, and a "Movie Showcase," featuring scenes that showcase the high definition audio and video.
The Blu-ray release features a 1080p transfer, allowing you to see details missed on DVD. The picture looks great, but the audio is amazing. Disney has included English, French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 audio tracks, but it's the uncompressed 48 kHz/16 bit 5.1 track that sounds the best. The uncompressed audio will add a new dimension to the movie, allowing you to hear sounds that you won't notice in the Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Turn it up; the movie sounds great!
