The Shape of Life Episodes

2002, TV Show

Episode Detail: The First Hunter; The Conquerors - The Shape of Life

Part 2 (of three) pays homage to the animal world's first hunters (flatworms, most likely), and the first ones to leave the sea: arthropods (probably bugs and spiders). Flatworms were able to stalk prey (some 565 million years ago) because they had central nervous systems and brains; arthropods climbed onto land (some 380 million years ago) because they had jointed legs. Eventually, some species (by now three-quarters of all creatures) developed wings. Says narrator Peter Coyote: They “have filled our world with unbridled diversity.”
