Is the Hoff Returning to the Knight Rider Redux?

David Hasselhoff by Dave Bjerke/NBC Photo

Sexy, fast and action-packed, NBC's Knight Rider is revving up for a fall start. Continuing with its redux of the classic series — complete with a fresh cast and an all-new K.I.T.T. — the TV-movie-turned-series has plans that map out a second season, should it do well with the masses.Still, some of us just can't get enough of David Hasselhoff — aka the original Michael Knight. Speaking on a Thursday Comic-Con panel, one of the show's gurus admitted that they're down for a Hoff return, too — and not just for his requisite cameo. One of the show's honchos divulged that yes, there was a breakfast meeting with Hasselhoff for what was meant to be an hour-and-a-half. Four hours later, it was agreed that if the show gets decent mileage, the original Michael Knight might return. Between the Hoff's apparently busy schedule and NBC already having eight shows in the can, though, they'd only bring him back full-time for "something very specific, and to extend the new mytholo... read more

NBC's New Schedule Offers Super (Bowl)-sized Office

The Office by Chris Haston/NBC Photo, Saturday Night Live by Dana Edelson/NBC Photo, Christian Slater by Karen Neal/NBC Photo

Ausiello gave you a first glimpse at NBC's new fall-winter-summer (!) schedule, and now here are some other details coming out of the network's earlier-than-usual upfront presentation.• Super Bowl host NBC this year will air a special episode of The Office after the big game, followed by an episode of the Office spin-off.• As you may have gleaned from that previous item, the long-rumored (and first reported by TVGuide.com) Office spin-off is a go, and will premiere in the winter.• SNL Thursday Night Live, a four-week series leading up to the election, airs after The Office (which will, again and alas, present hour-long episodes all September).• Friday Night Lights will return for a third season in the winter, in the same Fridays-at-9 time slot.• Knight Rider has landed a Wednesdays-at-8 berth. Brand-new fare includes:• My Own Worst Enemy, starring Christian Slater as an unwitting spy (Mondays at 10 pm, leading out of Heroes). • Crusoe, based on the... read more

Knight Rider Puts Vegas Boss Behind the Wheel

KITT by Mitch Haddad/NBC Photo

Gary Scott Thompson, who gave us Las Vegas but also (and more relevant to this particular situation) penned Fast and the Furious, has inked a new two-year deal with NBCU, as part of which he will get behind the wheel at Knight Rider. Serving as show-runner, Thompson will executive-produce alongside Doug Liman, David Bartis and Dave Andron (who penned the backdoor pilot). With action and effects being a major part of the rebooted series, it is hoped that Thompson and his Fast experience can ramp up the quality seen in the TV-movie. Now if he can just recruit Vanessa Marcil to give K.I.T.T. a soapy wash every week, I'm in! — MWM read more

NBC Lines Up Deadwood Star, Knight Rider for Fall

Ian McShane by Albert L. Ortega/ WireImage.com

Deadwood's Ian McShane will play King Silas in Kings, a new series inspired by the story of King David (Aussie actor Christopher Egan) and reportedly a lock for NBC's 2008-09 slate. Sources tell the Reporter that the Peacock on Wednesday will also announce series pickups for Knight Rider, the Christian Slater spy drama My Worst Enemy and The Philanthropist, which centers on a billionaire who sets out to help others. It is hoped that NBC will also confirm the rumored DirecTV pickup of Friday Night Lights. The Wednesday upfronts reveal is the earliest in the network's history, and at least six weeks ahead of the standard May fanfare. As long as it's bringing us more series news, faster, I'm all for it. I'm responding to the recent ...

Question: I'm responding to the recent Knight Rider-related exchange, in which you said, "I've got nothing against harmless escapism, and I wouldn't argue with the person who commented on my Dispatch that not everything on TV should have to be Masterpiece Theatre." I would argue with that person — not by saying that everything should be Masterpiece Theatre, but by saying that it's a rhetorical sleight of hand, using the loaded term "Masterpiece Theatre" to justify mediocrity (or, more precisely, to rationalize his or her own willingness to put up with it). Surely not all TV should be highbrow culture. I enjoy a good deal of middlebrow escapism: shows whose goal isn't to challenge viewers but to provide fast-paced, immediately emotionally gratifying, predictable and low-stress entertainment, often with fantasy or magical-realist elements (though many of these shows transcend escapism: Chuck, Psych, Monk, Gilmore Girls, Reaper, 24, My Name Is Earl, Desperate Housewives, Supernatural, ... read more

I read your opinion about ...

Question: I read your opinion about Knight Rider and I have to disagree. I thought it was fun. Now, it's not going to win any awards for best show, best actor, best actress, etc., but it wasn't a complete waste of time, unlike some others I can think of (and yes, I know I'm probably going to get flamed by your other readers). Also, there wasn't anything else on (that I wanted to watch) so I watched it. I will say this: If it comes on again and it's on at the same time as Lost, I wouldn't watch it, and won't if it interferes with any of my obsessions. At any rate, I noticed that the show isn't on NBC's schedule. Was the premiere just a "test run" to see what people would think of it? Is there any word from the NBC people that they plan to bring the show on regularly? Thanks for your thoughts.... and please don't flame me for having fun with Knight Rider. Answer: Trust me, Knight Rider will be back as soon as NBC can turn it around and put it back on the schedule. (Why wait for fall if ... read more

Unlike one Matt Roush, I ...

Question: Unlike one Matt Roush, I greatly enjoyed the Knight Rider telepic. Do your omniscient insiders have any word yet on whether NBC will pick it up as a series?

Answer: According to the only insider that really matters these days, A.C. Nielsen, Michael and KITT are cruising for a fall pickup.
