While coping with his gambling addiction and demanding surgeon father, paramedic Wyatt Cole (Tom Everett Scott) goes on numerous emergency runs, where he ends up treating a belligerent drug user and victims of a car accident involving a drunken driver. Meanwhile, the romantic chemistry between Cole and his ex-girlfriend Alice (Elizabeth Reaser) intensifies.
