Premise: Writer-director Ingmar Bergman's acute, deeply affecting six-part study of a marriage in decline. It was originally shown on Swedish TV in 1973 and, like `Roots' in America, became the talk of the nation. It charts a well-to-do couple's strains, discontents and self-deceptions, illuminated when divorce lawyer Marianne wonders whether `there is any way that two people can live together all their lives.' In edited form, `Scenes' won a National Society of Film Critics award.
