Episode Detail: The Mind's Big Bang - Evolution

Part 6 examines “how the human mind was born,” says narrator Liam Neeson. It happened in Africa some 50,000 years ago, and it enabled our ancestors to communicate effectively with each other. The hour explores creativity (bead making) in Turkey some 43,000 years ago, and looks at how early humans were smarter than Neanderthals (better spears). It also examines the importance of language. It's why we're at the top of the food chain and chimps aren't. “If they don't see [something],” says British scientist Robin Dunbar, “they don't know it.”
