Episode Detail: Between Brecht and Beckett; The Law of Gravity - Changing Stages

In the conclusion, host Richard Eyre explores the contributions to 20th-century theater of Brecht and Beckett, and examines challenges facing 21st-century theater. The two titans, Eyre says, charted “the landscape of society [Brecht] and the landscape of the soul [Beckett].” The hour also examines the works of British and American playwrights who came in their wake, from Edward Albee, Sam Shepard and August Wilson to David Hare, Tom Stoppard and Harold Pinter. As for the future, Eyres says: “The theater has to tell us stories about ourselves. And then we'll listen to them.”
