“Canyonlands: America's Wild West” tours this rugged 40,000-square-mile wilderness located mainly in Utah. “Survival here,” says narrator Sally Kellerman, “is always hard won.” Among the winners: a mule deer, seen eluding a mountain lion; the scavenging raven, a “clever opportunist” (and, perhaps surprisingly, a monogamous creature); the prairie dog, which uses an escape tunnel to avoid a hunting badger; and the “killer mouse,” “ounce for ounce one of the most ferocious predators in the Wild West,” says Kellerman.
