A geological and social history of Ayers Rock, the massive sandstone formation in the heart of Australia's Outback that Aboriginal people call Uluru. Its geological history dates back some 400 million years, and Aborigines have considered it sacred for untold thousands. The first white explorer didn't find it until 1872, but now it's a tourist mecca. Indeed, many environmentalists fear that the number of tourists is threatening its viability.
