Episode Detail: The Power of Literacy - In the Life

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham (“The Hours”) hosts a look at the power of books. Included: three authors of young-adult fiction are interviewed about the challenges they face; how Texas determines some textbooks used by the country; and profiles of '50s pulp-novel author Ann Bannon and author E. Lynn Harris. Also: a visit to the Black Gay and Lesbian Archives at the Schomburg Center in Harlem; and a chat with Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Debra Chasnoff.

Premise: A gay and lesbian-themed magazine series that includes investigative reports and profiles of newsmakers, along with features on aspects of gay culture. The series drew fire even before it aired when then-senator Bob Dole attacked it as a `gay Ed Sullivan show.' The show persevered, however, went on to win awards from several gay and lesbian organizations, including the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and GLAAD.
