Episode Detail: Diamonds of War - National Geographic
Following the diamond-smuggling pipeline from mines in Sierra Leone to the industry's center, Antwerp, Belgium. Before reporter Dominic Cunningham-Reid begins his journey (some of which was recorded with a hidden camera), a Sierra Leonian official tells him that 60 percent of the diamonds leaving his country do so illegally. And profits have financed wars (Sierra Leone's civil war is seen in clips) and terrorist operations. “Diamonds are easy to smuggle,” says Alex Yearsely of Global Witness. “That's why people get away with it.”
