The first of five reports on people who prize individuality focuses on animal lovers. Included: Californians St. James and LaDonna Davis, who lived for more than 30 years with a chimp named Moe. Authorities took Moe in 1999 after he bit a police officer, and in 2005 two other chimps attacked the Davises during a visit with Moe at a wildlife sanctuary. Also: Alaskan “bear whisperer” Timothy Treadwell, the subject of a Werner Herzog documentary, who was mauled to death by grizzlies in 2003.
