Updating “The Staircase,” a 2004 report on the murder case of Kathleen Peterson, a telecommunications executive who was found dead at the foot of the stairs of her Durham, N.C., home in December 2001. Her writer-husband Michael Peterson was charged with bludgeoning her to death; he claimed she died in a fall. This French-produced cinema-verité documentary chronicles the case from Michael Peterson's point of view. An eight-hour version, which aired on the Sundance Channel, won a Peabody.
