Debut: Richard Dreyfuss stars as Max Bickford, an abrasive yet impassioned history professor going through a midlife crisis. In the opener, Max is passed over for a promotion that goes to a former student (Marcia Gay Harden). Premise: An abrasive yet impassioned history professor at a women's college suffers a midlife crisis. `This isn't going to be just about Max teaching, but about his learning,' said star Richard Dreyfuss. `He doesn't know anything anymore about his life.' Unfortunately, Max didn't have much time to find out; the thoughtful, superbly cast series lasted but one season.
