Episode Detail: Life Sentence (Pilot) - The Court

Debut: Sally Field holds the swing vote in this drama series revolving around a Supreme Court justice. Field plays Kate Nolan, who, in the opener, is quickly confirmed as a justice. That's no surprise: Nolan's capable, likable and hard to pin down philosophically. How she'll fit in on the sharply divided court remains to be seen, even after she weighs in on her first case, involving a woman from her home state of Ohio who's serving a life prison term. At the same time, back in the Buckeye State, a TV reporter (Craig Bierko) is digging for dirt on Kate. Townsend: Pat Hingle. Martinez: Miguel Sandoval. Voorhees: Chris Sarandon. Desett: Diahann Carroll.

Premise: One of two unsuccessful Supreme Court series to debut in 2002 (the other was `First Monday'), this one centered on a newly minted associate justice perceived as naive by her colleagues.
