Episode Detail: Day at the Beach - Oliver Beene

Debut: The early '60s are hardly wonderful for the Beenes of Queens in this sitcom, narrated by younger son Oliver, “Wonder Years”-style. Ten-year-old Oliver (Grant Rosenmeyer) is a clumsy class clown whose hero is Lenny Bruce, while his mom (Wendy Makkena) is Jackie Kennedy's biggest fan and his dad (Grant Shaud) has a passion for dentistry. In the opener, the Beenes spend a day at a beach club. It's no day at the beach for anyone. As for Oliver, he gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be the swimming partner of his beloved Bonnie (Amy Castle). Trouble is, he can't swim. Voice of the adult Oliver: David Cross.

Premise: Early-'60s dysfunctional-family humor, narrated by the (now-adult) younger son, `Wonder Years'-style. The dysfunction comes naturally when Mom is obsessed with Jackie Kennedy and Dad really enjoys being a dentist (it's his hobby as well as his job). As for 11-year-old Oliver, he's the `class clown' whose hero happens to be comic Lenny Bruce.
