Keith Carradine by Randy Tepper/Showtime
Cheers to Keith Carradine for turning up the heat on Dexter. As Special Agent Frank Lundy, the skillful character actor is pursuing the titular avenger with the same eerie singlemindedness he brought to his own role as a serial killer also named Frank! on Criminal Minds. (The fact that Lundy's dating Dexter's cop sister only makes him more threatening.) The suspended Sgt. Doakes seems too hotheaded to catch the coolly calculating "Bay Harbor Butcher," but Lundy could bring him down if Dex's creepy ex-lover Lila doesn't do him in first, that is. Lennie James and Skeet Ulrich by Greg Schwartz/CBS
From "emily86":Cheers to CBS for making Jericho a midseason replacement. While other networks will be showing reruns and reality shows [during the writers' strike], CBS will have seven new episodes of Jericho. This is sure to give CBS a major ratings boost, as well as bring in a multitude of viewers for Jericho! Read and react to Bruce Fretts' opinions on The Office "finale," Project Runway and more! Project Runway' s Simone by Barbara Nitke/Bravo
Jeers to Project Runway for not making it work. The fourth season's first elimination seemed based more on personality than talent. True, Simone's outfit lacked a "wow factor" (as did she, at least in the footage we saw). But how could they spare Elisa considering Heidi Klum's trenchant analysis of her train-wreck dress: "Her model looked like she was pooing fabric"? Maybe because touchy-feely Elisa is already rubbing her competitors the wrong way, and that makes for better TV. Of course, this isn't the first time Runway has kept a contestant around for troublemaking rather than dressmaking skills: Wendy Pepper, anyone? Christopher Meloni in Law & Order: SVU by Eric Liebowitz/NBC Photo
Jeers to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for cheating Christopher Meloni and viewers out of a potentially powerful plotline. The promos for this week's episode made it look like the Emmy-nominated star would be dealt a dramatic challenge when his character, Det. Elliot Stabler, gets blinded by a perp. As it turned out, Stabler only suffered temporary blurred vision, and the story gave miscast guest star Arye Gross (as a schizophrenic serial rapist) and generic supporting player Diane Neal (as ADA Casey Novak) showier roles. Anybody who remembers Meloni's captivating performance as sociopath Chris Keller on Oz knows he deserves better. Cheers to Heroes for bringing David Anders into its present-day cast. Sure, his stint as a samurai with Hiro in 17th-century Japan dragged on too long, but now that his immortal character has been renamed Adam Monroe and teamed up with Peter, Anders fits right in. I'm still not sure about Adam's motives he seemingly saved Nathan but also allegedly murdered Hiro's dad, among others. Still, if anyone can straddle the good-guy/bad-guy line with charm and style, it's the man who played Alias' slithery Mr. Sark. From Roy Herstein in San Francisco...Jeers to the Nov. 4 episode of Cold Case for thinking we wouldn't do the math. The murder takes place 69 years ago in 1938. All of the major characters are, at best, in their early thirties, which would make all of them over 100 today. Miraculously, they are all still alive and played by actors in their seventies and eighties, like Pa Walton (Ralph Waite) and Seinfeld's Uncle Leo (Len Lesser). Jeers to AMC for rerunning Mad Men out of sequence. For viewers who missed out on the scintillating '60s ad-agency drama the first time or for fans who wanted to enjoy it a second time this was the perfect opportunity. But the cable network followed last week's encore of Mad Men's pilot with... a repeat of Episode 4? That made me almost as Mad as the ill-conceived pregnancy twist in the show's season finale. Sarah by Freddie Reshew/Pottle Productions Inc.
Jeers to America's Next Top Model for proving size matters in the worst way. In nearly every cycle, the CW's reality staple brings in a plus-size contestant, then boots her. This time it was Sarah who got eliminated, in part because the judges felt she was losing too much weight (a charge she denied). But who can blame her for feeling pressure to stay thin when superskinny front-runner Heather fainted on a music-video shoot because she hadn't eaten all day? It's time for Tyra Banks to put her money where her mouth is and pick a Top Model with some meat on her bones. Danny Glover by Richard Cartwright/ABC
Cheers to Danny Glover for his masterful performance on Brothers & Sisters. The Lethal Weapon vet brought charm and gravitas to his role as Isaac Marshall, a Machiavellian adviser enlisted by an unexpectedly pregnant Kitty to help her presidential-candidate fiancé manage the crisis. "I wouldn't want to waste your talents on something trivial," Kitty told Isaac, and B&S didn't waste Glover's talents, either. Even though Kitty lost the baby, I hope ABC's drama elects to bring Glover back. Read and react to Bruce's opinions on Saturday Night Live, Jerry Seinfeld and more! Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Brian Williams by Dana Edelson/NBC
Cheers to Brian Williams for his newsworthy turn as host of Saturday Night Live. We all knew the NBC Nightly News anchorman was witty from his guest spots with Jon Stewart and Conan O'Brien. This just in: The guy can act, too. Williams scored big yuks as a Bronx fireman, a disgruntled CW costar and an underwhelmed Publishers Clearinghouse winner. My only quibble: Why didn't they use him on "Weekend Update"?Related: Barack Obama Unmasked on SNL Read and react to Bruce's opinions on Jerry Seinfeld, Criminal Minds and more!
