Elena's humanity is back, but has the old Elena really returned?

After Elena (Nina Dobrev) acted like a brat — and that's putting it nicely — for the last few episodes, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) exhausted all their options before ultimately killing Matt (Zach Roerig). Fortunately he had his life-saving ring on, but Elena wasn't made aware of that until the emotions came flooding back. Now that she can feel again, will she return to being the newbie vamp she was prior to her brother's death? And how far will she go to succeed in her latest mission to kill Katherine? In the first clip from the episode (which airs Thursday, Oct. 11 at 8/7c), Elena learns that she that she and Matt (Zach Roerig) were in a fatal crash. Relieved to find out that Matt made it out alive, Elena is horrified when Damon bluntly tells her how exactly it is that she "survived." (We're glad to see Damon's wry humor is back!)

The Vampire Diaries has added one more vampire.
Elena met her fate in the Season 3 finale after her fateful trip over Wickery Bridge left her on a slab in the morgue. But don't worry: She will be back next season, along with her portrayer, Nina Dobrev, who joined the rest of the cast and executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson at their Comic-Con panel, moderated by TV Guide Magazine's Debra Birnbaum, on Saturday dish about the upcoming season. (Turns out, Elena was supposed to become a vampire in Season 2, so this has been a long time coming!)

When The Vampire Diaries returns for Season 4, the friendship between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) that fans have been clamoring for will finally be further explored.
"I always look at Caroline as Stefan's future [best friend] Lexi [Arielle Kebbel]," executive producer Julie Plec said during this weekend's ATX Television Festival panel, moderated by this reporter. "You've seen little pockets of a friendship spark between them, and I see Caroline in the long run of the series becoming that important in Stefan's life."
