Elena's humanity is back, but has the old Elena really returned?
"Without a doubt she's forever changed, but she's on a slow climb back to returning to an Elena driven by love, compassion and loyalty," Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec tells TVGuide.com.
After Elena (Nina Dobrev) acted like a brat — and that's putting it nicely — for the last few episodes, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) exhausted all their options before ultimately killing Matt (Zach Roerig). Fortunately he had his life-saving ring on, but Elena wasn't made aware of that until the emotions came flooding back. Now that she can feel again, will she return to being the newbie vamp she was prior to her brother's death? And how far will she go to succeed in her latest mission to kill Katherine? Plec spills below.
The Vampire Diaries premiere is finally upon us, and what better way to celebrate than to share a few snippets from Thursday night's episode (8/7c, CW)?
How many Damon-centric memories will come back to Elena now that she's in transition? How many times is poor Matt (Zach Roerig) beat up for being saved over Elena? Watch our Season 2 premiere of The Vampire Diaries Bite below for those answers and more!
"Am I dead?" The Vampire Diaries' Elena (Nina Dobrev) asks Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) when she wakes up after her accident on the CW drama's Season 4 premiere.

The Vampire Diaries has added one more vampire.
Elena met her fate in the Season 3 finale after her fateful trip over Wickery Bridge left her on a slab in the morgue. But don't worry: She will be back next season, along with her portrayer, Nina Dobrev, who joined the rest of the cast and executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson at their Comic-Con panel, moderated by TV Guide Magazine's Debra Birnbaum, on Saturday dish about the upcoming season. (Turns out, Elena was supposed to become a vampire in Season 2, so this has been a long time coming!)
When The Vampire Diaries returns for Season 4, the friendship between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) that fans have been clamoring for will finally be further explored.
"I always look at Caroline as Stefan's future [best friend] Lexi [Arielle Kebbel]," executive producer Julie Plec said during this weekend's ATX Television Festival panel, moderated by this reporter. "You've seen little pockets of a friendship spark between them, and I see Caroline in the long run of the series becoming that important in Stefan's life."
