Zac Efron Sidelined in Hospital

Zac Efron by Jeffrey Mayer/

High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron is in the hospital with appendicitis, TMZ reports. With his singing ostensibly stopped for the moment, is the music still in him?Only time will tell, but sources say he has had his appendix removed and is recuperating. It won't be too long, then, before Troy's back to get his head in the game for production of the third HSM installment. — Anna DimondRelated:• High School Musical 3 Cast Confirmed• High School Musical 3 Not Struck by Strike read more

I am really hoping that ...

Question: I am really hoping that Disney will do the right thing and pay the High School Musical cast what they are worth so they will all sign on for HSM3. My 7-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter absolutely love both movies, and we would all be sad if Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens sit out over money disputes. They seem like very level-headed kids, considering the whirlwind surrounding them right now. Didn't Disney make these movies for very little money? If so, who is profiting from the merchandising? We have both soundtracks, my daughter has some HSM clothes, and the stores are filling up with toys, party products, cards, etc. It seems only fair to give these young actors a cut of that money, since they are the reason the kids love the movies! I am praying that none of the HSM kids will turn into a Britney or LiLo. They all seem like good people who are aware of the tweens watching their every move. I hope they can enjoy this time in their lives and that they continue to make ... read more

HSM Starlet's Nude Pic Goes Public; Disney Mum on "Fired" Rumblings

Vanessa Hudgens by Steve Granitz/

This news certainly will make mild-mannered Mickey Mouse's ears perk up. Hours after a nude photo of someone resembling Vanessa Hudgens circulated the Internet, the 18-year-old High School Musical star came forth to admit that it is, in fact, her in the pic. In a statement to TMZ, a rep for Hudgens says, "This was a photo which was taken privately. It is a personal matter and it is unfortunate that this has become public." The Enquirer, which broke the story, claims Hudgens snapped some racy pics for HSM beau Zac Efron. Alas, they fell into nefarious hands (as nude pics of up-and-coming starlets tend to do). "Shooting into a mirror with her camera phone, she took photos of herself stripped except for a gold chain around her waist," writes the tabloid. "She also photographed herself in the tub, blowing kisses... and sensuously pulling down her bikini bottom."It's enough to make Corbin Bleu turn red. As for Disney, the company thus far is offering a firm "No comment" on talk that Hud... read more

I wanted to respond to your ...

Question: I wanted to respond to your High School Musical 2 comments. Unlike Jena, I didn't mind the song-tastic start to the movie and, like you, I did mind the long songless middle. I felt that the middle was a whole lot of Teen Beat cover boy Zac Efron brooding and emoting, with not enough singing. It's when the movie finally takes an Efron break for the baseball diamond showdown between Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) and Chad (Corbin Bleu) that the movie actually gets its fun back. According to recent reports, the leads (Efron and his magazine-cover costar Vanessa Hudgens) are apparently going for more cash to return for HSM3. I know Efron and Hudgens sell magazines, but is their romance really (or does it have to be) what advances the movies? For me, HSM has always been about the peripherals, like hat-loving Ryan, food-cooking Zeke, piano-playing Kelsey and move-busting Martha. Considering the fact that youngsters will flock to Disney's mega-franchise no matter what, can't they make a third ... read more

HSM2, Miley Cyrus Dominate Teen Choice Awards

Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron by Michael Yarish/Fox

High School Musical 2 and Hannah Montana rocked Sunday's Teen Choice 2007 kudos-cast, scooping up three surfboards apiece. Among HSM2's wins were Choice Male Hottie (Zac Efron) and Breakout Female Music Artist (Vanessa Hudgens), while Miley Cyrus scored Choice Summer Artist and TV Actress honors.Among films, Pirates of the Caribbean 3 bagged four 'boards, including Choice Action Adventure and Villain (Bill Nighy), and Shia LaBeouf and Sophia Bush earned Breakout Male and Female kudos. On the purely superficial front, Jessica Alba was named Choice Female Hottie. read more

I'm glad you liked High ...

Question: I'm glad you liked High School Musical 2, but I just couldn't watch it. I stumbled onto the original movie and found it entertaining enough (my child is too old for Disney; I sometimes watch it in secret. I love Kim Possible!). So over the weekend I thought I'd catch HSM2 — I couldn't get through the opening 15 minutes. I know that music — and Zac Efron — are the stars of this show, but the plot should at least be halfway plausible. Instead it was contrived and flimsier than a stripper's veil: Everyone in the high-school "gang" gets jobs at the same prestigious country club — without interviews, or even applications? Puh-leaze! Plus, I think there were three or four songs in the first 10 minutes alone; I guess Disney doesn't follow the "less is more" philosophy. The first HSM movie was the big hit that it was because it was fresh and didn't follow any formula (sort of like the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie), but the second one had the first one to live up to, and I ... read more

Zac Efron: The New David Cassidy?

Cover photos: Zac Efron by Matthew Rolston for Rolling Stone; David Cassidy by Annie Leibovitz for Rolling Stone

It's really really hard for me to even fake the slightest bit of interest in High School Musical 2 and its unprecedented success. As TV Guide Channel's Nikki Boyer put it so succinctly the other night on Watch This!, if the record-breaking numbers prove anything, it's simply that kids love crap. But like a lot of people, I was struck by the recent cover of Rolling Stone and the magazine's positioning of HSM2's squeaky-clean "hunk" Zac Efron as "America's Latest Heart Throb." I realize a lot has changed over the years, and Rolling Stone is hardly the countercultural force it was in the early '70s, but the Efron cover — and the toothless interview within — immediately brought to my mind the staggeringly popular teen idol David Cassidy's appearance on the cover of the same magazine back in 1972.Already a huge star thanks to the runaway success of The Partridge Family — and the grueling, nonstop touring schedule he endured over his weekends away from the set — Cassid... read more
