Top Model's Jennipher: Can't She Spell? | Today's News: Our Take | 10/25/2004
Ever notice how those wannabes on America's Next Top Model have such oddly spelled names? Last year's winner was called Yoanna House. There's a fine moniker — if you're a drag-queen realtor. This season, the gals bear names like Yaya, Toccara and Norelle. Whassup wit dat? TV Guide Online decided the latest eliminee, Jennipher Frost, would be the perfect one to ask. Here's what the 22-year-old barkeep from Pocatello, Idaho, had to say. TV Guide Online: What's with the "ph"? My Watercooler pal, Damian, said you need to get hooked on phonics.Jennipher Frost: I was born spelling it with an f. Then, in sixth grade, there were so many Jennifers in our class — one went by Jen, one was Jenny, one was Jennifer... I had to do something different, so I changed it to Jennipher. I like the cool, unique spelling 'cause I don't know anybody else that has it. So I went and changed ev

Missy Elliott Does UPN Bash | Today's News: Our Take | 7/22/2004
On Tuesday night, the broadcast portion of the TCA press tour wrapped up in fine style. That's when UPN hosted an all-star clambake at Shutters on the Beach, a posh shorefront hotel in Santa Monica, Calif. In Party Boy's humble opinion, the belle of the beach was Missy Elliott, whose hip-hop talent search, On the Road with Missy Elliott, debuts this fall. Although surrounded by her entourage of sexy sistah friends and bulky bodyguards, Missy was surprisingly friendly and accessible. (Especially since I happened to know Road's exec producer, who also helms Big Brother.) I took advantage of our meet 'n' greet to ask a question that's been burning in my mind for years now. Party Boy: In your racy "Work It" song, you say, "Is it worth it? Let me work it. I put my thang down, flip it and reverse it." What "thang" do you mean, exactly?Missy: [Laughs] I'm just talkin' about my rap skills. It ain't nothin' nasty!

Top Model's Shandi Tells All | Today's News: Our Take | 3/29/2004
Although Yoanna House ultimately won America's Next Top Model, 21-year-old Shandi Sullivan crowned herself the resident drama queen of Season 2. This weepy Walmart clerk was full of true confessions, wasn't she? She told her fellow Model wannabes (and the nation) how unloving her parents are. She told judge Janice Dickinson she had tried drugs, and even robbed a Kansas City candy store back in 2001. She also phoned boyfriend Eric to admit cheating on him with an Italian stud in Milan. Why is Shandi's life such a mess? Only a qualified therapist could really answer that, so here, TV Guide Online just rings her up for some candid dish, Shandi-style. TV Guide Online: You had such drama on this show. It must be exhausting to be you!Shandi: [Chuckles] You have no idea. TVGO: Why do you think the judges cut you?Shandi: I let it fall apart at the end; I wasn't co

Yoanna Speaks Out! | Today's News: Our Take | 3/26/2004
As expected, Tyra Banks named icy diva Yoanna House the winner of America's Next Top Model in this week's finale. That unpleasant sound you hear is the Shandi and Mercedes fans grinding their teeth in frustration. (Grrr...) Here, TV Guide Online quizzes the 23-year-old ex-baby-sitter on her dramatic 50-lb. weight loss, those eating-disorder rumors, catty competition and her mysterious lookalike! TV Guide Online: Your clone on Sephora's Spring 2004 catalogue cover made folks peg you as the winner a week early.Yoanna: [Chuckles] I don't think she looks a lot like me, but that's what the buzz is. I disagree. I asked everyone who knows me, "Does this look like me?" They say, "No way!" TVGO: Her name is Cassia. Do you know her?Yoanna: No, I actually don't know who she is, but I know Sephora had no idea who the winner was. So it couldn't be me on that cover!

Top Model's Mercedes Defeated | Today's News: Our Take | 3/25/2004
Poor Mercedes Scelba-Shorte. This 21-year-old from Valencia, Calif., went from "cutesy mall girl" to fierce fashionista on America's Next Top Model. She soldiered on to the final two, despite the exhaustion of facing catty competitors, long hours and a lupus diagnosis. In the runway showdown with Yoanna House, Miss Mercedes worked that catwalk J.Lo-style. Yet Yoanna was chosen by Tyra Banks & Co., spurring surprised TV Guide Online readers to send us lotsa grumpy e-mail. Here, we talk to the Model wannabe who many feel should have won. TV Guide Online: Our readers are bummed you lost.Mercedes: Thanks. I'm bummed, too. TVGO: With your feisty facial expressions and booty-swingin' on the runway, you reminded us of J.Lo.Mercedes: Oh, that's so funny! And I'm not even Latin. TVGO: You're not?Mercedes: I grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood and I speak a little bit of Spanish, but
