The Tuesday Playlist: Dance on ABC and Fox, PBS' Ghost Army

In what may be a first, a freestyle routine on Monday's final performance round of ABC's Dancing With the Stars — the passionate, intimate contemporary routine performed by Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough — was so terrific it would fit right in on TV's best dancing showcase, Fox's So You Think You Can Dance. As Stars ends its run, with a two-hour finale (Tuesday, 9/8c) welcoming back the season's entire cast — including Wynonna Judd, who'll perform "I Want to Know What Love Is" — the mirrorball ceremony overlaps with a two-hour audition episode of So You Think You Can Dance (8/7c), which is what you should watch if you want to know what dance is in all of its variety.

Aly Raisman is focused on one thing this week on Dancing with the Stars. "I want to impress Carrie Ann [Inaba]," she tells TVGuide.com. "She said I held back the first week and that I went out of character last week, so I don't want her to think that again this week." Dancing with the Stars Boss on Recapturing the Magic (and Viewers): "It's Back to Basics"

Last fall, a longtime goal of Dancing with the Stars producers came into fruition: an all-stars season.

Thirteen alums returned, but viewers fled. The onetime ratings juggernaut delivered less-than-glittery numbers — partially due to The Voice's first fall outing siphoning eyeballs. But executive producer Conrad Green also believes it's because fans want to see dancing with new stars, not all-stars.

"Perhaps that was a miscalculation on our part. Maybe we underestimated how important it was to have a new story rather than a continuation of one," Green tells TVGuide.com. "We thought seeing old favorites come back would be really appealing, and I think it was to core fans of the show. All-Stars did deliver in terms of being able to try some new dances out, new challenges and really pushing the level of competition. I think what it lacked was the shock of the new.
