William H. Macy, Blake Johnson, Emmy Rossum
CSI: NY (Friday, 9/8c, CBS)
Ever since JAG signed off nearly six years ago, one of the most frequent topics in my mailbag is the hope that David James Elliott (last seen in ABC's short-lived Scoundrels last summer) will find his way back to CBS. For at least one week, his fans get their wish, as Elliott guests as the FBI agent ex-husband of Sela Ward's Jo. (Do we sense a triangle brewing?) In the case of the week, a guy dressed as a clown shoots a bakery owner, and the investigation reveals a skeleton in Det. Flack's past. (Presumably not wearing floppy shoes.)

Based on a British series, the John Wells-produced show revolves around Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy), the alcoholic ...
The chasm between cable and network programming loomed especially large on Thursday, Day 2 of the Television Critics Association presentations, as Showtime occupied the morning and the CW the afternoon. Never the twain shall meet, as Showtime unveiled a provocative array of shows that caters to the very adult, while the CW, whose focus is anything but, introduced a mere two-pack of new fall shows that rests safely if stylishly within the network's comfort zone of young female empowerment...

Tyler Perry's House of Payne by Andrew Eccles/TBS
TBS' half of Turner's Wednesday upfronts presentation kicked off with renewal news for Tyler Perry's House of Payne (returning in June) and 10 Items or Less. The laugh-centric cabler then announced a development slate featuring: National Banana Already in Progress, a late-night sketch show exec-produced by Jerry Zucker (Airplane!). A scripted comedy produced by Def Jam's Russell Simmons and starring Run DMC's "Run." A half-hour laffer exec-produced by and starring William H. Macy. A late-night reality series which returns middle-aged men to their frat boy days. (And you thought all it took was a case of Pabst.) An improv show exec-produced by Jamie Foxx. Top Ten, which claims to "pit comedians against each other."Bookmark our FALL TV GRID | Review All of Our FALL TV NEWS

Oh, don't go calling The Star. The Designing Woman has just been cast as William H. Macy's missus in his upcoming TNT show Family Man, about a closet burglar. That is, he's secretly a burglar, he doesn't only burgle closets. In other casting news, Tony-winning Jersey Boy Christian Hoff has joined the Fox pilot Hackett as a foil for Donal Logue's wacky schoolteacher.

There's no series finale written and producers and cast aren't yet ready to sign off for good but if, as many predict, ER's County General closes its doors at the end of its upcoming 14th season, the NBC drama wants to lure back as many of its cast as it can. Noah Wyle (Dr. John Carter), who's popped in and out of the show for a number of years, is returning for multiple episodes, and there will be no running around in Africa this time. "He'll be in Chicago in the ER, interacting with all our people," executive producer David Zabel tells TVGuide.com. The doc is back to check out the Joshua Carter Center, a gift from his big-bucks family, as well as for a medical concern. In turn, ER is hoping to bring back Thandie Newton, who plays Carter's wife Kem. Zabel says they've also talked to Gloria Reuben (as Jeannie Boulet) and Julianna Margulies (Carol Hathaway) about returns. "Julianna's doing a show now (midseason's Canterbury's Law), but we can always write a story that can shoot in a ...
Spider-Man 3 courtesy Sony Pictures
Come Oct. 30, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 will be available on Blu-ray HD in the Spider-Man High Definition Trilogy Set. Spider-Man 3 will also be available as a stand-alone. Living legend Stevie Wonder is going to tour the U.S. for the first time in decades starting Aug. 23. At present, the Wonder Summer's Night tour is set to include 13 cities, but he may still add a few dates. TNT has OK'd a pilot for Family Man, an hour drama starring William H. Macy as an everyday dad by day, criminal mastermind by night. If he really wants to do projects this kooky, he oughta just join wife Felicity Huffman on Wisteria Lane and be done with it, already.Friday's Today's News was written by Ben Katner.
