The View Announces Whoopi's Trip to Xanadu

Whoopi Goldberg by Donna Svennevik/ABC

During their daily gab session at the beginning of The View, a very made-up cast member of the show Xanadu, a big Broadway homage to the movie of the same name, announced that Whoopi Goldberg would be joining the cast for the month of August.Whoopi, fresh off a story about playing ball at Yankee Stadium last weekend, said she is thrilled to be joining Xanadu at the Helen Hayes Theater during her vacation from The View. The Whoop doesn't mind skipping her vacation this year, admitting, "If I have vacation time, it's dangerous." Can't wait to see Whoopi in her frou-frou Xanadu costume? The Tonys: Putting On a Great Show

Whoopi Goldberg hosting the 62nd Annual Tony Awards by Theo Wargo/ WireImage.com

Next to TV, theater probably qualifies as my most consuming passion. Whereas I love TV for its ability to bring millions together for a shared experience on an expansive canvas that’s always fascinating to chart, I treasure the theatrical experience for its shared intimacy, the knowledge that what an audience of dozens or hundreds is witnessing live will never happen exactly the same way again. (The fact that in classic Broadway tradition, these performers and crews do it eight times a week never fails to astonish me.)This helps explain why the Tonys is potentially my favorite awards show any given year, a celebration of commercial theater that gives the national audience a rare glimpse into the shows that has the stage world buzzing. I say “potentially” because in recent years, the Tonys (despite moving into the cavernous Radio City Music Hall) has become a diminished franchise, taking what was once an all-out musical spectacular that made room for elaborate tributes... read more

Patrick Swayze: Friends, Colleagues Send Support

Patrick Swayze by Richard Lewis/ WireImage.com

In the wake of the shocking news that Patrick Swayze has pancreatic cancer, many friends and colleagues rushed to make statements of support for the star of Dirty Dancing.• Swayze's physician, Dr. George Fisher, expressed optimism, saying that the actor "has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far."• Whoopi Goldberg gave Swayze credit for her Oscar win. It seems that Swayze lobbied hard for Goldberg to play Oda Mae Brown in Ghost, even going as far as to threaten to back out of the film unless she was cast. "When I won my Academy Award, the only person I really thanked was Patrick," Goldberg said Thursday on The View.• A&E chimed in to announce that while The Beast, a pilot that stars Swayze as an unorthodox FBI veteran, is still in contention for pickup, "at this time all of our thoughts are solely with Patrick and his family. We are all wishing for a speedy recovery to a truly gifted actor."• Swayze's Dirt... read more

All's Well Between Oscar and Snubbed Whoopi

Whoopi Goldberg by Donna Svennevik/ABC

Four-time Oscar host Whoopi Goldberg teared up on Monday's The View after the ladies brought up her exclusion from what looked like a tribute montage to past hosts on Sunday's telecast. In turn, Gil Cates, who produced the show, called Whoopi to apologize. "That piece of film was made to honor 80 years of Oscar's most memorable moments," he told TV Guide. Because of the show's crash production schedule after the end of the WGA strike, Cates saw the montage only days before it aired. "I never realized that Whoopi wasn't in it — and she hosted two times for me! And Steve Martin's not in it, I now realize. I feel badly for him, too. It was just totally an oversight." Not that he's calling Martin with his mea culpa. "No, Steve's not that kind of guy." Cates is embarrassed "that anyone would think there was any reason that Whoopi wasn't included, except by accident. We did use a very major piece of her in the piece on [winning] supporting actors. She thanked me for calling, and tol... read more

Whoopi! Hurrah! Yay! The View (Ratings) Still Good

Didn't see this one comin'. Whoopi Goldberg's first week on The View tied Rosie O'Donnell's with a 1.2 rating (which had previously been the best that the chatfest had ever gotten for a premiere week). Moreover, says the Hollywood Reporter, the show was up 42 percent from the week before and up 12 percent in the key women aged 18-49 demo. Sherri Shepherd's brought some eyeballs to The View as well. Sherri Shepherd Signed On to The View in August

Comic Sherri Shepherd has been chosen to fill Star Jones Reynolds' long-vacant fifth seat on The View. Although the official announcement will have to wait until Sept. 10, the deal was made back in August, TV Guide has learned exclusively. The View producers were hoping to stay mum about Shepherd’s status for a couple of weeks to keep the hoopla focused on Whoopi Goldberg's signing on as moderator. But an anonymous source leaked the news early.Shepherd, who has guest-hosted on the ABC chatfest over a dozen times, campaigned hard for the job. "I’ve been telling them I’m available," she told TV Guide in June. "If you want me, I’m available." Apparently, what Sherri wants, Sherri gets. — Reporting by Ileane Rudolph read more

Whoopi's Debut Dogged by Her View on Vick

Whoopi Goldberg by Steve Fenn/ABC

Whoopi Goldberg's Tuesday arrival as a cohost for The View nearly went without incident, save for her take on the Michael Vick controversy. Opining that dogfighting "isn't that unusual" in the South (where Vick hails from) and positing that "there are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of the country," Whoopi drew fire from a myriad of media bloggers and columnists, as well as PETA. "A lot of people who live and work in the South... will not appreciate the view that cruelty to dogs is an accepted Southern pastime," PETA's prez said in a statement. "What unites [dogfighters] is lawlessness and callousness, not whether they eat grits."For our Matt Roush's own take on Whoopi's first day, see the Roush Dispatch.Related: The View to Unveil Another New Cohost on Sept. 10 read more
