Winner of the Best Independent Film Award from the Boston Society of Film Critics, director Victor Nunez’s (Ulee’s Gold, Ruby in Paradise) Gal Young ‘un is considered a landmark work of the American independent film movement. Set in Florida in the 1930s, Gal Young‘ un involves an independent woman (Dana Preu) who marries a charming but self-indulgent man (David Peck) much younger than herself. As her husband becomes preoccupied with the young housekeeper (J. Smith) hired to help them, his wife struggles to maintain equilibrium in the relationship. Gal Young 'un was blessed with almost unanimous critical praise. Shot on location in rural Florida, the work was an obvious labor of love for Nunez who produced, directed, wrote, and shot the film.

Sonny Mann, (Timothy Olyphant), an ex-con returning home from prison, creates a new dynamic for both friends and enemies with his arrival. Sonny only wants money due, as his long suppressed desire for Ann (Sarah Wynter), now married to his best friend and local sheriff Dave Lockhart (Josh Brolin), puts at risk life's delicate balance of family and community.
