The Monday Playlist: Castle Goes Half-(Hitch)Cocked for Case No. 100

Usually, Richard Castle's overactive imagination is a good thing — so good that as he helps his NYPD buddies solve scores of murders, you often wonder how they'd ever get along without him. In the set-up for Castle's clever lark of a 100th episode on ABC (Monday, 10:01/9:01c), they're forced to go solo as Castle (Nathan Fillion in rare form) stews in boredom in his apartment, nursing a busted leg. Until he picks up his new birthday binoculars and goes all Jimmy Stewart-in-Rear Window, convinced he's witnessed a murder across the street, eventually drawing his beloved Beckett and intrepid daughter Alexis into the Hitchcockian-homage intrigue. The more agitated Castle gets, the more skeptical everyone else becomes, and as the twists and comically suspenseful close calls pile up, leading to yet another chewing-out by that spoilsport Capt. Gates, we're treated to an entertaining object lesson in the "seeing isn't believing" playbook. Well done, including the timely subplot involving the murder of an IRS agent which, even when chair-bound, Castle can't help inadvertently helping his friends figure out.

The Following: What's Joe's Larger Plan?

It seems like all the pieces are falling into place for Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) on Fox's The Following. The FBI's technology has been compromised, Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) is nearing his breaking point, and Joe's ex-wife Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea) is en route to the mansion where Joe and his followers are hiding out. Heck, Joe's even starting to bond with his son Joey (Kyle Catlett) — over s'mores, no less!

But hold on a minute. According to Purefoy, this part of the story might be only the beginning of Joe's endgame — and his "super objective" remains to be seen.

The Following Sets Up a "Major Shift" for Claire and Jacob

For at least two characters, Monday's episode of The Following could be a game-changer.

First up, there's Jacob (Nico Tortorella), who was last seen standing menacingly in the doorway of the Followers' mansion and giving an ominous greeting to his (ex?)-girlfriend, Emma (Valorie Curry). Tortorella says his character's  steely glare is a byproduct of Jacob killing his best friend Paul (Adan Canto). "I really feel like everybody should consider him a threat now at this point," he tells TVGuide.com. "He's got blood on his hands now and I feel like Jacob just wants more at this point."

The Following's Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

The Following didn't just bring Kevin Bacon to series television for the first time, but it brought him and his co-stars closer together — as in their Bacon numbers.

Check out the scariest TV and movie serial killers

Now that they're working with Bacon, all of their Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon numbers is one, obviously. But what were they before? Bacon did not share the screen with any of his Following co-stars prior to the show and most of them are from a younger generation and/or are newcomers, so you might assume that they'd have a high Bacon number. But based on... read more
