Martin gets high on a pot-laced brownie; Frederick visits the dark side. Frasier's excitement about his son's arrival is diminished when Frederick shows up in shocking goth attire--donning all black, chains and dark makeup. Even worse, his goth girlfriend, Andi, is in town and he only wants to hang out with her. Daphne and Martin try to console Frasier by recalling their own rebellious stages. However, Niles is ashamed when he realizes he was a 'goody two-shoes' his whole life; he sets out to sow his wild oats. Roz hooks Niles up with a pot-laced brownie made by her neighbor. Unbeknownst to him, Martin innocently intercepts the brownie, polishes it off and orders another to replace it before Niles returns. Later, Niles brags to Frasier about his 'high', with only a nibble missing from the brownie. Moments later, Martin comes home, completely stoned. He laughs uncontrollably and talks nonsense. Niles believes that Martin's outrageous behavior is a figment of his own hallucination. Frasier realizes the mix up when Martin refrigerates his pants and dips potato chips in pudding. When Frasier forbids Frederick from spending the weekend with Andi, Frederick leaves in a huff. He later returns home, after getting dumped, and turns to Frasier for advice.

Roz gives Frasier a lucky penny as a talisman for Frederick's competition in the National Spelling Bee, but Frasier doesn't want Freddy to think he needs luck. Frasier coaches Freddy the night before the big competition and Martin worries that Frasier is putting too much pressure on the boy. Niles and Daphne wish Freddy good luck since they won't be able to attend. Frasier tells Freddy that Niles was once a champion speller. At the National Spelling Bee, Niles was the last one standing, but he walked off stage without spelling the final word. No one really knows why he did it. Martin and Frasier are in the audience to see Freddy win. During the celebration party afterwards, Spelling Bee official Bernard Gadston (Philip Casnoff) stops by to accuse Frasier of cheating. John, father of second-place contestant Warren took videotape of the event and, while watching it, saw Frasier spelling out the words silently. Freddy protests that he didn't look at Frasier, but Bernard Gadston is forced to take the trophy. Frasier is filled with guilt from ruining Freddy's big day. Frasier wants to fix the matter somehow and talks to a lawyer, but Martin tells Frasier he must let the situation go. Niles tells Freddy that, years ago, he walked off the stage because winning had become unimportant to him. Niles knew in his heart that he could do it and that was all the accomplishment he needed. Freddy tells Frasier that he wants to go to the celebration banquet and hold his head up. John annoys Frasier at the banquet by being condescending and Freddy loses his temper when Warren calls him a cheater. The crowd agitates for another spell-off between the two to settle the matter, but Bernard Gadston refuses. Everyone goes outside, but Niles encourages Freddy to be the bigger man and walk away. Warren's insults even get to Niles, however, and Niles then encourages Freddy to humiliate Warren by beating him again.

When Lilith visits Seattle over Thanksgiving, Frederick conspires to reunite his parents. Frasier looks forward to spending Thanksgiving with his son, Frederick, who will be flying in from Boston with Frasier's ex- wife, Lilith. Yet instead of just dropping off Frederick and continuing on to Vancouver to spend the holiday with a colleague as planned, Lilith finds herself stranded when her friend gets sick. Frederick invites Lilith to spend the holiday with the Cranes and Frasier reluctantly agrees. Despite some residual tension between Lilith and Niles, who once shared a passionate tryst, Thanksgiving dinner goes off without a hitch. Knowing Lilith is writing an article on raising a child after a divorce, Frederick convinces his parents to collaborate on the piece, and even arranges for Lilith to stay with the family at Frasier's condo, rather than at a hotel. While Uncle Niles struggles to master Frederick's video games, Frasier and Lilith break out a bottle of wine and get cozy while working on their article. A series of events orchestrated by Frederick leads Frasier and Lilith to realize he's trying to push them back together, but they soon learn his reunion plot is really just a ruse to 'guilt ' them into giving him a mini- bike!

Frasier's son, Frederick, is coming to Seattle for a visit, so Frasier excitedly makes all sorts of plans. Topping Frederick's vacation wish list: a private tour of Microsoft headquarters. Frasier pulls in a favor and gets Roz to call an ex-boyfriend who works for the company to arrange the tour, but he's no longer an employee. Meanwhile, Roz and Bulldog are pumped up about playing on the station's softball team. When Frederick decides that he wants to see his dad play softball, Frasier joins the team rather than disappoint Frederick again on top of the Microsoft debacle. There's just one small problem: Frasier doesn't know how to play. To get up to speed, Frasier convinces Martin to take him to the batting cages and teach him the game. After a series of mishaps, Frasier is forced to tell Frederick the truth. To Frasier's surprise, this revelation doesn't bother Frederick in the least, and he urges his father to play anyway.
