Betty's father, Ignacio, had a turbulent third season on Ugly Betty. He spent most of it recovering from a heart attack, and his girlfriend, Elena, left town for a nursing job. Nevertheless, Tony Plana, who plays the Suarez patriarch, says Ignacio remains optimistic and is ready for whatever comes his way. Plana tells TVGuide.com how Ignacio's personal life has changed, where he'll be working this season and how his family is evolving before his very eyes.
TVGuide.com: How are things going for Ignacio now that he's a citizen and has a new lease on life?
Tony Plana: He's got quite a crazy family still, but also his horizons have expanded in terms of his personal life — especially after his heart attack. I think he took a look at his life and said, "I'm always there for everyone else, but I got to take a look at myself and see what I want to do in this last stage of my life." He pursues ...

Betty Suarez will use her recent promotion for good when Ugly Betty returns for its fourth season.
Members of the cast turned up at the United Nations this week to promote the UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets program, which promotes the use of bed nets that keep mosquitoes from spreading malaria. The global, grassroots campaign will be integral to the show's Season 4 premiere.

In the process, she spreads the word about the Nothing But Nets program — just as the show's stars are spreading the word in real life...

Could Season 3 bring a musical episode of Ugly Betty? It's inevitable, say the cast of the ABC show. On Wednesday night at the Alzheimer's Association's 16th-annual "A Night at Sardi's" fund-raiser, almost the entire Ugly Betty ensamble along with stars from Heroes, Boston Legal and even Brothers & Sisters' Steven Weber in a glittering snakeskin suit performed selections from the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie. Betty's Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Becky Newton, Mark Indelicato, Vanessa Williams, David Blue and Chris Gorham proved that they can belt out a tune like the best of Broadway, which is no surprise as most of them hail from New York and are, as Ortiz puts it, "theater geeks." For Ortiz, joining the charity show after being asked by her on-screen dad was a no-brainer. "Tony Plana's mother is afflicted with Alzheimer's, so when he asked us to do this we jumped at the chance to honor her. It's for a great cause. It's a wonderful thing." But that doesn't mean the ac...

It's no news that Lindsay Lohan was supposed to join Ugly Betty for a guest-starring turn, but what most disappoints Tony Plana about the cameo that may never happen is that he won't get to interact with the starlet. "She was going to be somewhat involved in [Ignacio's] world, which I like," he told TV Guide at the Body Language Sportswear store opening in Los Angeles. "The predictable thing would be to have her involved in the fashion world.... So I was happy. I think it would have given her a whole different kind of thing to play."Plana thinks the writers will have to drop such guest stars and subplots to efficiently wrap up Season 3, but regarding La Lohan's guest gig, one should not lose hope just yet. "As far as I know," he says, "we're still talking to her." Carita RizzoRelated: Ugly Betty Fan Lohan "Flattered" by ABC's Interest Lindsay Lohan a Pretty Good Bet to Join Ugly Betty?
