  • In 1945, witnessed the surrender of Japan from a mile away aboard his naval vessel, the USS Proteus. 
  • Used the G.I. Bill to attend acting school after leaving the Navy.
  • Signed with Universal Studios in 1948, earning a salary of $75 a week.
  • Received his only Oscar nomination for 1958's The Defiant Ones, in which he and Sidney Poitier star as prisoners on a desperate break for freedom while chained together.
  • Is one of the images that make up the album cover for The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. 
  • Spent much of his free time on sets sketching and painting, and considers art to be his second career. His work has been displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan and Harrods of London.
