Alec Baldwin hosted the 37th season premiere of Saturday Night Live, breaking the record for most times hosting (16). The 30 Rock star surpassed his It's Complicated co-star and one-time Oscar co-host, Steve Martin, who made a surprise appearance during Baldwin's monologue to make sure he was doing it "honestly" -- without the use of steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs. Who says nothing happens on the weekend before Labor Day? (And we're not talking storm preparations on the East Coast — at least not in this space.) Nowadays, TV almost never takes a holiday, and such is the case this weekend. A few highlights:
Torchwood: Miracle Day (Friday, 10/9c, Starz) I wish I could report that last week's terrific episode (Jack's 1920s flashback, which went from romantic to disturbing in a bloody flash as he was revealed as "the blessing") represented a return to form for this otherwise woefully uneven season of Torchwood. But I'm afraid we're back to the present day this week, and the action is just as ridiculously clumsy and the characters (Rex and Esther in particular) as aggravating as ever. Still, with only two episodes to go after this, I'll watch to the end.

Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennett's "Body and Soul" duet will be released as a charity single benefiting a foundation being set up in her name.
Winehouse and Bennett recorded the track earlier this year for his upcoming Duets II album, which was the last record the singer made before her July 23 death.

Carrie Underwood and Tony Bennett will appear on the season premiere of Blue Bloods, CBS announced Thursday.
In the episode, the singers will play themselves, performing at a fundraiser that Frank (Tom Selleck) and Erin (Bridget Moynahan) are attending. Underwood and Bennett will meet the father and daughter before singing "It Had to Be You" for the crowd. Underwood collaborated on the classic tune for Bennett's upcoming album, Duets II, which drops Sept. 20.
