Richard Roundtree and Pruitt Taylor Vince provided the dramatic muscle in an otherwise lightweight episode about a DOA at an MMA fight. The man once known as "the black private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks" — Shaft! — proved he still knows his way around the ring as a sly trainer. If only Roundtree could recur, like he did in recent years on Heroes and Desperate Housewives. With CBI rocked by a violent Red John-related death on last night's episode of The Mentalist, Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) will now have to contend with the possibility that one of his trusted teammates had a hand in the murder. Enter Special Agent J.J. Laroche (Murder One Emmy winner Pruitt Taylor Vince), who arrives December 9 to launch an investigation into suspects Rigsby (Owain Yeoman), Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) and Cho (Tim Kang).

Tim Kang isn't that different from Kimball Cho, the straight-arrow investigator he plays on CBS' hit drama The Mentalist (Tuesdays, 9 pm/ET). He is focused and thoughtful in his answers to my questions, but careful not to reveal too much or paint too limited a picture of Cho, lest future scripts contradict him. He does say that we'll learn more about the character in upcoming episodes — more than that he has a crayon-shaped piggybank behind his bedroom door.
