Don Kirshner, Music Impresario and TV Producer, Dies at 76

Don Kirshner, who provided one of the early hip outlets for pop and rock music on television, has died. He was 76.

The music impresario and television producer died Monday of heart failure in Boca Raton, Fla., promoter Jack Wishna told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

"Sincerity" Helps The Sing-Off's Winning Group Rise Above the Rest

Before stepping onto The Sing-Off stage, Committed had never ventured far from their usual terrain of gospel and inspirational music. While that would have been a disadvantage going into a pop-friendly competition, these Alabama boys won over the judges and viewers.

"I believe it was our sincerity," Committed member Therry Thomas tells TVGuide.com. "Not saying the other groups aren't sincere, but I think it's just our background brings us to a whole other world, like a whole other place and sometimes we don't even imagine where we're going. It's magical."

Sting Takes on Studio 60, American Idol and... the Lute?

Before Sting decided to reunite The Police for a high-profile summer mega-tour, the eclectic musician tackled a much more low-key project: interpreting a set of lute-based songs by Elizabethan 16th-century composer John Dowland. The resulting CD, Songs from the Labyrinth, became a surprise hit on the classical charts. Tonight, Sting channels Dowland once more on PBS' Great Performances (check local listings), an almost spiritual hour of music and conversation that shows the singer in a more intimate setting than the stadiums and arenas he'll play in a few months. We spoke with Sting just days before he and The Police opened this year's Grammys. TV Guide: read more

Police Confirm Tour, But Evasive About New Album

Undoubtedly elating Sonya, my unrequited high-school crush whom I haunted with "Every Breath You Take" more than one too many times, Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland announced on Monday that The Police will reunite for a tour kicking off May 28 in Vancouver, hitting Europe, then swinging by the States for dates in such cities as New York, Boston, Denver and Las Vegas. Recalling the genesis (oops, wrong '80s group) of this reunion, Sting tells the AP, "I woke up one morning about three months ago and this lightbulb went off: 'I'm going to call Andy and Stewart and tell them we should tour.'" As for the differences that splintered the trio in 1984, Sting dismisses them as artistic, not personal. "[They] were all about music. Also, hairstyles." The group, meanwhile, sidestepped questions about a new CD possibly being born of the tour. read more

Musical Notes: A Reunion for Gwen? No Doubt!

In an interview airing on Thursday's Extra, Gwen Stefani hints that next on her L.A.M.B.-monogrammed plate, following her upcoming tour, is a reunion with No Doubt. "I'm sniffing around with [them]," she says. "We're going to record another record".... The Police have scheduled a Monday, post-Grammys reunion press conference at which, Billboard speculates, they will announce a 30th-anniversay world tour.... Celine Dion will unveil a new song, "I Knew I Loved You," during a tribute to composer Ennio Morricone at this month's Oscars. Said it before, I say it again: Didn't she retire?! read more

November 21, 2006: Synchronicity

I found it quite appropriate that the theme of tonight’s episode was printed on an old rock T-shirt Chris stole from Lorelai when they were teenagers: Synchronicity. It began the second Lorelai put that shirt on and said she’d never take it off. (Here, let me quote you some of the lyrics by The Police: "Synchronicity / A connecting principle / Linked to the invisible / Almost imperceptible / Something inexpressible / Science insusceptible / Logic so inflexible / Causally connectable / Yet nothing is invincible.")Is it just me, or do those lines explain exactly what’s going on between these three couples: Chris and Lorelai, Luke and April, and Rory and Logan? Each of them is bound together in this episode by odd timing and twists of fate: After 20 years, Chris and Lor are now the married couple settling into the house that, ironically, Luke rebuilt. Sure, there was some back-and-forthing about the flat-screen TVs in practically every room and how they’d need to re... read more
