The Life and Death of Peter Sellers

For both of you who skipped reading Damian J. Holbrook's deliciously snarky blow-by-blow of Sunday night's Emmycast, those wiseguys from The Sopranos, MIA this year, contracted out a hired gun named Inspector Clouseau to get the job done for HBO. Fueled by nine wins for The Life and Death of Peter Sellers — including a gold lady for star Geoffrey Rush — HBO amassed 27 Emmys overall, the same tally as the top two broadcast networks, ABC (with 16) and CBS (11), combined. Monk's Tony Shalhoub and Medium's Patricia Arquette were the night's "not so expected" wins and Felicity Huffman beat out Housewives favorites Teri Hatcher and Marcia Cross. Boston Legal's James Spader (a repeat winner) and William Shatner packed a one-two punch, and everybody showed Raymond read more

Since Desperate Housewives ...

Desperate Housewives

Question: Since Desperate Housewives started, Teri Hatcher has been getting all the media attention. She won the Golden Globe, the SAG Award and the spotlight. However, in the final episodes of the show, Marcia Cross' performance reached an incredible level, stealing every moment. They are both nominated for best actress at the Emmys, but I am afraid that Cross' chance could be canceled by Hatcher's buzz. In my opinion, Desperate Housewives is an ensemble and Cross deserves the same attention that Hatcher has been given. Do you think that with Hatcher's early awards and the media coverage she is getting, the Emmy is already in her bag? Also, I have been hearing that DH might have trouble in the best comedy race, since Arrested Development is a more traditional comedy (and we all know that Emmys are very traditional). Answer: Arrested Development is "traditional" only in the sense that it's a half-hour program. If it has an edge to win over Housewives as best comedy, which I doubt, it's ... read more

HOUSEWIFE-TO-BE

Desperate Housewives diva Marcia Cross is engaged to her boyfriend of six months, stockbroker Tom Mahoney. A wedding date has not been set, but extremely unreliable sources say it'll likely coincide with Teri Hatcher being "regretfully unavailable." read more

BURNT OFFERINGS

Next spring, Hyperion plans to publish Burnt Toast, a book of advice penned by Desperate Housewives' Teri Hatcher. "I have had so many women approach me, sharing their own stories and [asking] me how it feels to have a second chance at 40," says Hatcher, a self-proclaimed onetime has-been. "With this book, I hope to reach everyone that I don't bump into on the street and share my story." In related news, Howie Long is now a Borders stock boy. read more

TV Guide picked Eva Longoria ...

Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria

Question: TV Guide picked Eva Longoria for an Emmy nomination for lead actress in a comedy series. Why didn't she get nominated? She's so funny. What makes Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman and Teri Hatcher more deserving of an Emmy nomination? Is Eva Longoria the Kristin Davis of Desperate Housewives? Answer: First off, before we get too deep into this year's unavoidable litany of Emmy gripes, I suggest you check out my analysis of the Emmys from last week. Trying to explain the whys and wherefores of who does and doesn't get nominated is pretty much an impossible task, but in this case, I like the analogy to Sex and the City's Kristin Davis, who often had to sit and watch while her more experienced and acclaimed co-stars got the awards glory. It's not that she's less deserving, but she is the relative novice in these ranks, and her sex-kitten role, though deliciously played, is probably the slightest and least-developed of the major characters. (I'm not going to start a new round o ... read more

WISTERIA ROUT

Desperate Housewives

Nominations for the 57th Emmy Awards were announced this morning and, as expected, ABC's Desperate Housewives cleaned up with 15 nods, including best comedy series and bids for leading ladies Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman. Housewives tied NBC's terminally ill Will & Grace for most nominated series. (No, that wasn't a typo.) ABC's other freshman smash, Lost, scored 12 nods, including best drama series and supporting actors for both Naveen Andrews and Terry O'Quinn. Among the pleasant surprises: long-overdue nominations for NBC's Scrubs and star Zach Braff; supporting nods for The Shield's CCH Pounder and Grey's Anatomy's Sandra Oh; and best-actor nods for Deadwood's [bleepin'] brilliant Ian McShane and House's crabby doc Hugh Laurie. Of course, there were also plenty of glaring omissions, most notably WB's perpetually ignored Gilmo read more

Wanted: TV's Perfect Face

Still think beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Think again. According to one expert, it's possible to figure out exactly what makes a "perfect" face. And you'll be surprised at how he rates some of today's hottest male and female TV stars. After 27 years as a practicing oral and facial reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Stephen Marquardt used his professional experience, along with his studies in engineering, to build a patented mask that he believes defines the ideal face. It's based upon a mathematical construction that uses the ancient Greek ratio known as the Golden Mean, a proportion that for centuries has helped artists, architects and others create eye-pleasing forms. Dr. Marquardt's initial interest in this field of study was inspired by his personal life, beginning at age 4 when his mother suffered a car accident. "She was disfigured," he says, "so I always thought about why, when someone's face changes, you perceive [that] the whole person changes." A read more

Teri Hatcher's Desperate Mom

Actress Lesley Ann Warren joins Desperate Housewives on Sunday (9 pm/ET on ABC) as Susan's mom, Sophie Bremmer. It's perfect casting since Warren, 58, and Teri Hatcher, 40, look like they really could be mother and daughter. Their striking resemblance will be alluded to in each of Warren's five episodes this season. "In the script," she delightedly tells TVGuide.com, "they are always saying to Susan, 'She is too young to be your mother.'

"Sophie is wild," Warren continues. "I get to be inappropriately sexy, drinking, vulnerable and volatile. Sophie has been married four times, is a hopeless romantic — and a loving mother, but she can't get it right, just like most of us."

Spoiler alert! If you don't want to know any more about Sophie's scandalous stay on Wisteria Lane, read no further. This week, Sophie moves in with S read more
