Laurel and Hardy movies inspired him to become an actor.
Was a member of Chicago's Remains Theatre founded by William Petersen and Gary Cole.
Came to fame as serial killer Buffalo Bill in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs. The voice of Family Guy's Chris Griffin is based on that character's intonation.
Successfully segued from film to TV when cast as Captain Leland Stottlemeyer on Monk in 2002.
