Ask Matt: Scandal, Walking Dead, NCIS, Elementary, Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Question: I started watching Scandal from the start, when it was simply a problem-of-the-week plot mixed in with a little soap opera with Olivia and the President. They lost me a little bit last year when they temporarily dropped that element to completely focus on the soap opera element when the president was shot. With the addition of the B613 storyline (and possible new Harrison storyline), I feel the show has lost its focus. I was highly enjoying Lisa Kudrow's story and performance only to have the show dragged down by B613's machinations and apparent manipulation of Quinn. I get the fear the show could be the political Love Boat where the guest stars get all the meaty storylines, but I watch shows like Strike Back for my spy action and adventure. Have these writers learned nothing from the mistakes countless shows including Alias and recently Revenge have made with these over-the-top secret maniacal agencies? — Brian

Ask Matt: Blacklist, Coven, Nashville, Parenthood and NBC's Thursday Comedies

Jessica Lange

Question: I'm enjoying The Blacklist thus far and would watch it for James Spader's performance alone, but I'm also enjoying the stories as well. NBC is sticking to a formula that has worked before, albeit on a sister network. The intriguing loner, at odds with a government agency, solving the case of the week with the help of his associates, with a through story that's addressed for a few minutes at the start and end of each episode, just enough to keep the serial nature of the story going. Am I the only one who thinks that The Blacklist is Burn Notice with a network budget? If the show is successful, NBC will end up as an expensive version of USA Network. Not there's anything wrong with that. — Rick

The Thursday Playlist: Reign, White Collar Join a Crowded Night

Reign

History be damned. And that's no joke, though the show sometimes feels like one. The CW's Reign (Thursday, 9/8c) is all about herstory, an opulent and giddy bodice-ripper very loosely inspired by the teenage years of the ultimately ill-fated Mary, Queen of Scots (a pouty Adelaide Kane). It's like Masterpiece Junior as seen on MTV after a jolt of Red Bull, or more to the point, Gossip Girl goes to court. And while it will win no prizes for scholarly accuracy (to put it mildly), Reign is such a fanciful folly of royal romance and literally poisonous court gossip that it's hard not to hail a CW show that breaks so lavishly from the network's usual formula of angst-ridden ghouls and cloying rom-com.

Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany Stretches Her Comedy Muscles on Parks and Recreation

Tatiana Maslany and Aziz Ansari

Tatiana Maslany has shown great acting range creating multiple unique clone characters on Orphan Black. But can she do comedy?

On Thursday's Parks and Recreation (8/7c, NBC) Maslany will play the love interest of Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari), whom she meets at the Parks Department. Tom, of course, doesn't make a great first impression, but Maslany's character, Nadia, won't mind because she's looking for a little mental escape from her job with Doctors Without Borders.

The Weekend Playlist: Foyle's Cold War, A Second Look at Orphan Black

Foyle's War

One war makes way for another as the incredibly durable Foyle's War, in its seventh Masterpiece Mystery! season on PBS, transitions from post-World War II intrigues to the ethically murky spy games of a burgeoning Cold War. "I haven't got the requisite capacity for deceit," grumbles former police DCS Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen, radiating crisp intelligence and decency), who once again is denied his dreams of retirement when MI5 spooks reel him in, fresh off the boat from America.

Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany Teases Season 2, Discusses Emmy Snub

Orphan Black

After only 10 episodes, Orphan Black made quite an impression on viewers, which makes the eight-month wait for Season 2 that much more difficult.

Over the course of its first season, Orphan Black weaved a tale of mystery and intrigue as to why a group of clones — all played brilliantly by Tatiana Maslany — came into existence and who is pulling the strings. Ultimately, Cosima's digging uncovered that each clone was actually trademarked, making them intellectual property of the Neolutionists with no control over their own lives.

Orphan Black Season 2 Scoop: New clones and Cosima's illness

Suffice it to say, the question of freedom will be raised in the upcoming second season, which goes back into production at the end of September. TVGuide.com caught up with Maslany on the set of Parks and Recreation — where she'll appear as a love interest for Aziz Ansari's Tom — to get the scoop on what's in store for each of the clones, including poor Alison, who inadvertently signed her life away in the finale. The 27-year-old actress also discusses the... read more
