Cheers: The Way He Was

Cheers to TCM for paying proper respect to Sydney Pollack by airing an interview with the filmmaker (taped shortly before his recent death) as the premiere of Elvis Mitchell: Under the Influence, ahead of "bigger" names like Bill Murray, Edward Norton and Richard Gere. Looking remarkably robust, the typically humble Pollack told charming stories about everybody from Burt Lancaster (who convinced the stage actor to become a director) to Dustin Hoffman (who convinced him to become an actor again by forcing him to play the agent in Tootsie — a role meant for Dabney Coleman!). I only wish the half-hour chat — and Pollack's life — lasted longer. • Share your own raves and rants about other shows on the Reader Cheers & Jeers discussion board.• We may feature your Cheer or Jeer on TVGuide.com or in TV Guide magazine! read more

As someone who values your ...

Question: As someone who values your opinion enough to start watching shows because of it (I will be eternally grateful for your harping on Friday Night Lights), I am curious what you think of Entourage now that it's completed its fourth season. When this show debuted, I loved it. It was both edgy and comical, giving us enough insight into the entertainment industry to root for (and believe) Vinnie's success in Hollywood while still allowing him and his boys to maintain their outsider perspective. But now the show is so formulaic, it bores me to tears. Just once I'd like to see Vince actually get upset because he seems to have stumbled in pursuit of what we are supposed to believe is his dream. Just once I'd like to see Eric tell Vince what he really thinks instead of just pandering to him as he would any other client (isn't that what the "lifelong friend" dynamic is there for?). Just once I'd like to see Ari have a conversation with Lloyd that is not derogatory or filled with gay ... read more

At the Movies: Douglas Returns to Wall Street?

How many more yachts can you water-ski behind, Gordon? Per Variety, Twentieth Century Fox is developing Money Never Sleeps, a Wall Street sequel to again potentially star Oscar winner Michael Douglas, but not involve Oliver Stone as writer or director.... Per the Hollywood Reporter, though Shrek the Third doesn't even hit theaters until the 18th, Deuce Bigelow's Mike Mitchell is already in talks to direct No. 4.... Stana Katic (aka Heroes' wireless gal) is an assassin in Stiletto, an indie thriller also starring Tom Berenger and Michael Biehn.... In the Works: HBO Drama Revisits 2000 Recount

Sydney Pollack is directing Recount, a film chronicling the aftermath of the 2000 presidential election, specifically the human drama of those involved in the controversial Florida recounts. A spring 2008 premiere on HBO is eyed.... Writers/directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland are turning 2006's Quinceañera into an ABC Family series. The pair are also penning for HBO Sensational, a film looking at Errol Flynn's scandalous affair with a 15-year-old girl. (To be fair, her MySpace page claimed she was 19.) read more
