With media attention building over the case, actor Martin Sheen visits Velazquez at Sing Sing and offers his support. Even with all the breakthroughs in the investigation, Velazquez still sees a long road ahead.

At an illegal gambling parlor, two men barge in with guns in a robbery attempt. After trying to resist, Albert Ward, a retired cop and owner of the gambling parlor, is shot in the head. An eyewitness singles out Velazquez as the shooter from police photos.

Immediately after the crime, every eyewitness said that the shooter was a light-skinned black male with braids. But Velazquez is Hispanic with no braids. At trial, his mother emotionally testifies that her son was on the phone with her during the time of the crime. Prosecutors said she was lying.

Velazquez, who has served over 13 years of his sentence, claims he never knew the other man convicted of the crime, Derry Daniels, now out of prison because of a plea deal. Meanwhile, Dateline tracks down a few of the original eyewitnesses. Some of their stories have changed.
