Stephen Daldry Fast Facts:

Spent a year in the early 1980s as a clown's apprentice in Italy.
Apprenticed at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield after university.
His stars on The Hours, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman, never met on set. Each of their scenes was shot at different times.
Made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2004.
The first filmmaker to be nominated for the Best Director Oscar for his first three efforts, Billy Elliot, The Hours and The Reader.
