Steve Buscemi by Elisabetta A. Villa/WireImage.com
OK, so it's not George Clooney returning, but the former Tony Blundetto aka Steve Buscemi will make an appearance on ER's 14th season finale, airing May 15. Atoning, we pray, for I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Buscemi plays "a loudmouthed drunk with a dangerous secret." And since this emergency room is often as dangerous as a cage-fighting venue, he'll "threaten the safety" of the hospital staff and make Pratt "choose between the life of a patient or the lives of his staff."Elsewhere in the season-ender, maybe-homewrecker Moretti (Stanley Tucci) will Luka find out he did the dirty with Abby? makes a return visit, as does Hal Holbrook's wise old geezer. Has it really been almost four months since last we spoke? I dont know about you guys, but as summer fades into fall, I am so ready to slip into my scrubs and welcome the start of season 14. As rumors swirl about whether or not this will be the last shift for our beloved staff at Chicago's County General, I am ready to settle in and enjoy the gurney ride. Indeed, the action picked up tonight right where we left off in May when we learned about Rays horrific injuries and watched as Neela was trampled in the chaotic aftermath of an anti-war demonstration gone horribly wrong. (Actually, I suspect that this particular episode was actually filmed at the end of last season.) Dr. Moretti (Stanley Tucci) kicked off his official reign as ER chief with the resulting mass casualty and Neelas life hung in the balance as a battalion of her friends and colleagues worked tirelessly to save her life. My only disappointment was that any suspense around Neelas fat...

Kathy Griffin by Steve Jennings/Bravo Photo, Andy Samberg by Dana Edelson/NBC Universal Photo
Gold mixed with blue at Saturday night's Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony. Though HBO's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee took home the most kudos five statues in all several major wins either were born of or unexpectedly led to salty language.Where to start? Kathy Griffin, whose Life on the D-List won best (non-competition) reality program, mock-scoffed at those who thank J.C. for their good fortune by saying (and I apologize for sharing this on a Sunday morning), "Suck it, Jesus, this award is my god now." Also using salty slang in accepting her award was Elaine Stritch, named best guest actress in a comedy (for her turn on 30 Rock). "It's kind of obvious how long I've been in this profession," said Stritch. "And I can't get over that I still feel the way I do. It's unf--kingbelievable."Another veteran actress, Leslie Caron, was Stritch's counterpart in the drama race (for her appearance on Law & Order: SVU), while Stanley Tucci (Monk) and John Goodman (Studio 60) ...

Michael Imperioli by Craig Blankenhorn/HBO
Jack Black has signed on to star in and produce The Lost Adventures of Stone Perlmutter Jr. for Universal Studios. In the mockumentary, he'll play a late-'70s Indiana Jones type... only tubby and a bit potty-mouthed. Ill-fated Soprano Michael Imperioli has been cast as the detective in Peter Jackson's DreamWorks adaptation of the best-seller The Lovely Bones. Stanley Tucci has also come on board as the killer. Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have announced the release date of the fourth Shrek movie: May 21, 2010. Gosh, that's so far away. If only they'd do something to remind us occasionally as opening day draws nearer. Salma Hayek's new MGM-based production company with a Latin flair, Ventanazul, is pursuing George Lopez to cowrite, produce and star in one of their inaugural projects.

Man, there was a lot of action to keep up with tonight challenging cases of couples in turmoil, pseudo-stalkers and missing doctors. (And lets not forget Luka in a robe. As if we could.) But first things first: let me say for the record that I have renewed hope for next season, and it arrived tonight in the guise of Stanley Tucci. I am intrigued by Dr. Kevin Moretti and what he promises to bring to the table as ER chief. Yes, I am a little prejudiced because I think Stanley Tucci is an amazing actor (Ive loved him in more movies that I can count, most recently in The Devil Wears Prada). But as he emerges from the long, gorgeous shadow cast by Goran Visnjic, I can still see this formidable actor bringing a grace, maturity and gravity reminiscent of Anthony Edwards. Remember, longtime fans, that Dr. Mark Greene was not beloved because of his dashing good looks or romantic plotlines, but rather because he was utterly believable as a beleaguered, jaded doctor wh...
