Before my son was born three years ago, I never really had a problem watching stories about kids or families in distress. In my former, nonmaternal life, I was able to handle a wide array of drama in my entertainment — family, medical, romantic, you name it — like a rational adult able to discern fact from fiction. What a difference having a family makes. Today, even the most remote suggestion of a suffering child, dying spouse or the like spurs a visceral reaction that generally results in uncontrollable histrionics. Needless to say, between the family saved from the snowbound car and the father and son caught in the gang crossfire (not to mention a whopper of a conclusion to the Grey's Anatomy three-parter immediately preceeding), tonight’s episode was an emotional roller coaster for me. Roy Geary is dead, gutted and bled out. At least he was happy before he died. A Cleveland what? I'm going to miss Matt DeCaro. We became good friends. I think we made a good team, too. He's a fine actor, very well-respected and renowned in Chicago theater. He's up for a Jeff Award (the Chicago TONY) this year for best actor; I hope he wins it. He was convinced the bigwigs at Fox were killing him off so they could develop a new TV series for Geary and Bellick. No one's been phoning my people about that! Not a bad idea, though! Bellick's still kicking... but for how long? Everything's ramping up and we're getting ready to launch the story into limbo for the holiday hiatus. Rumors are flying about the date we'll return. Question: Don't you think that the most talked about plot of Desperate Housewives, Bree and Orson, is way too similar to Season 2's Bree and George? Sure, Orson is a much better character, but really? Bree's marrying a psycho murderer for the second time, and even worse, in the Bree-George plot, an old friend of George's also alerted Bree that her fiancé was a murderer (much like Laurie Metcalf did at her engagement party). Are we just supposed to forget Season 2 in order to enjoy the third one? Marc Cherry promised improvement, but the repetition of plots is getting absurd.
Answer: I griped about this at the time Orson was introduced and his true colors emerged, at the end of last season. But now that the season is up and running, and running so much more efficiently than a year ago (with the exception of the dreadful Nora), I'll cut the show some slack on this front.
